It will be hard to find someone more excited to say than President Dr. Mark Rudin. He’s getting an early start by visiting several students and groups on campus to highlight what makes A&M-Commerce a great place to be. Today, Dr. Rudin visited the Gamma Phi Beta - TAMUC sorority, just one of the organizations on campus that helps to make Greek Life a vibrant and fun experience for Lion students.

In honor of the A&M-Commerce Alumni Association’s Teacher Appreciation Month, we are highlighting outstanding Lion alumni. We sat down with Elementary Library Media Specialist at Rockwall ISD, Angie Castillo, BS ’95, MS ’15.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝/𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭?

My greatest achievement was receiving my master's degree. It had been 16 years since I received my bachelor's degree from A&M-Commerce. I was older, married with children, and working full-time. It was hard at times and I may have wanted to quit but seeing my children cheering for me at my graduation was worth all the hard work.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲?

My high school senior English teacher, Roberta Harris, helped to promote my love of literature. I majored in English with an emphasis in Literature because of my enthusiasm for reading.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?

First, never quit learning. Learn from your administrators and co-workers. Even after 20 years of teaching, you can always find new and innovative techniques. Second, the best advice I was ever given was to treat every child that walks through your door how you would want your own child treated.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬/𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬? 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫?

I am a member of Gamma Phi Beta, vice president, and president of Panhellenic Council. Being a member of these organizations helped me develop many leadership qualities such as public speaking, problem-solving, communication, and delegation.

Our athletic accomplishments keep rolling in! Congratulations to our sister Destiny Skidmore on her BRONZE MEDAL in pole vault at the Lone Star Conference Championships!

CANYON – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's track and field team is in third place and the men's team is in fourth place as action wrapped up Friday in the opening full day of action at the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Congratulations to our Gamma Zeta sister Michelle Becker and the Lady Lions Golf Team for earning their spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship!

DENTON – The Texas A&M University-Commerce women's golf team qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time in program history on Wednesday, using a tremendous comeback effort to finish in third place at the West Regional Championships at Wildhorse GC at Robson Ranch.
