⚒️ FROM THE QUARRY | CHARACTER AND RESTRAINT
George Washington is remembered as a great leader, but one of the strongest examples of his character was not in taking power — it was in laying it down.
After leading the Continental Army through the American Revolution, Washington could have tried to hold on to authority. Many men in his position throughout history would have done exactly that.
Instead, he resigned his commission and returned power to civilian government.
That decision was bigger than politics.
It was a lesson in restraint, humility, and character.
A man’s character is not shown only by what he can do.
It is often shown by what he chooses not to do.
In Masonry, we often speak of self-government, discipline, and keeping our passions within due bounds.
Washington’s example reminds us that real strength is not found in grasping for power, praise, or position.
Real strength is found in knowing when duty has been done — and in having the character to place principle above self.
That is a lesson still worth remembering today.
