πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± 22 MASONS WHO DECLARED TEXAS FREE

DAY 1 OF 22 β€” RICHARD ELLIS

He didn't just sign the Texas Declaration of Independence.
He presided over the convention that created a Republic.

On March 1, 1836, delegates gathered at Washington-on-the-Brazos under extraordinary circumstances.

Santa Anna's army was already in Texas.

The Alamo was under siege.

And the men gathered at Washington were preparing to do something from which there would be no easy retreat:

Declare Texas independent from Mexico.

Before they could begin, they needed someone to preside over the convention.

The delegates unanimously selected Richard Ellis.

A Virginia-born lawyer who had lived in Alabama before coming to Texas, Ellis represented the municipality of Pecan Point.

As president of the Convention of 1836, Ellis appointed the five-man committee charged with drafting the Texas Declaration of Independence.

On March 2, 1836, the Declaration was adopted.

At the top of the signatures was the name of the convention's president:

Richard Ellis.

But declaring independence was only part of the job.

While war raged across Texas, Ellis continued presiding as the delegates worked to establish an interim government and write a constitution for the new Republic of Texas.

He would later serve in the Senate of the Republic.

Nearly two centuries later, we remember the famous battles and larger-than-life names of the Texas Revolution.

But before there could be a Republic to defend, men had to put their names on paper and create one.

Richard Ellis sat in the chair while they did it.

For the next 21 mornings, we'll introduce another Freemason whose signature appears on the Texas Declaration of Independenceβ€”and tell the story behind the name.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡± 22 MEN. 22 DAYS. 22 STORIES.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ€πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ FRATERNAL FRIDAY | BRETHREN WITHOUT BORDERS πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ€πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

All week, Montgomery Lodge No. 25 has looked across the Atlantic at the history of English Freemasonry and the Masonic traditions that have connected generations of Brethren.

Today, we're done looking backward.

We want to build something NEW.

Recently, we've had the privilege of connecting with our Brethren in England β€” including the Brethren of The Dover Castle Lodge 7202 - East Kent Freemasons β€” sharing Masonic education, history, and fellowship across thousands of miles.

And that gave us an idea.

Actually... it gave us a CHALLENGE.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ DOVER CASTLE LODGE β€” WHAT DO YOU SAY? πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Our Brethren at Dover Castle Lodge:

Montgomery Lodge No. 25 officially challenges you to join us in something we believe could be pretty special.

βš’οΈ THE FRATERNAL FRIDAY CROSS-ATLANTIC CHALLENGE βš’οΈ

Here's our idea:

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ You rally the English Lodges.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ We'll rally the American Lodges.

And together, let's see how many Lodges and Brethren we can bring into one conversation across the Atlantic.

Brethren, represent your Lodge in the comments with:

πŸ›οΈ Your Lodge name and number
πŸ“ Your city, state/county, and country
πŸ“œ The year your Lodge was founded or chartered
βš’οΈ One thing that makes your Lodge special

Tag your Lodge.

Tag your Brethren.

Share the challenge.

And let's see what happens when Brethren on two sides of the Atlantic answer the call.

But we don't want this to end with Facebook comments.

We want to turn those comments into REAL FELLOWSHIP.

πŸ† ONE LODGE FROM ENGLAND

πŸ† ONE LODGE FROM THE UNITED STATES

will ultimately be selected for something you can't buy.

βš’οΈ FELLOWSHIP AND BROTHERLY LOVE.

Montgomery Lodge No. 25 and Dover Castle Lodge would each help introduce the winning Lodges to Brethren on both sides of the Atlantic through a future Fraternal Friday feature.

We'll learn their history.

Meet their Brethren.

Discover their traditions.

Hear about their communities.

And find out what makes their Lodge tick.

Then comes the real prize.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸ’» πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

βš’οΈ THE CROSS-ATLANTIC TEAMS MEETING βš’οΈ

We bring the Brethren together LIVE on Microsoft Teams:

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Dover Castle Lodge

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Montgomery Lodge No. 25

πŸ† The winning English Lodge

πŸ† The winning American Lodge

FOUR LODGES.

TWO COUNTRIES.

ONE ROOM.

No ocean between us.

No speeches from thousands of miles away.

Just Brethren sitting face-to-face, sharing stories, comparing Lodge traditions, learning about one another's communities, laughing together, and enjoying genuine Masonic fellowship.

And afterward, we share the story.

Because maybe another Lodge sees it and reaches across the Atlantic.

Then another.

And another.

Three hundred years ago, Masonic ideas crossed the Atlantic aboard ships.

Today, fellowship can cross it in seconds.

🌎 DISTANCE SEPARATES OUR LODGES.

βš’οΈ THE CRAFT CONNECTS OUR BRETHREN.

There is no trophy.

There is no cash prize.

Because what we're offering is worth more than either:

The opportunity to meet Brethren you might otherwise never have the opportunity to sit with.

To learn from one another.

To build friendships.

And to strengthen the ties of Brotherly Love.

THAT is what Fraternal Friday should be.

Not simply talking about Brotherhood.

βš’οΈ BUILDING IT.

So before we go any further...

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ DOVER CASTLE LODGE β€” THE CHALLENGE IS YOURS.

Are our English Brethren in?

Drop your answer in the comments. πŸ‘‡

If Dover says YES...

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ England, get your Lodges ready.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ America, we'll see you on the other side of the Atlantic.

LET'S BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ€πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
