🌺 May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! 🌺

This month, the Office of Community and Belonging is proud to celebrate the vibrant histories, cultures, traditions, voices, and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. From art and literature to activism, innovation, music, storytelling, and cultural traditions, AANHPI communities have profoundly shaped our nation and continue to inspire generations.

As we celebrate, we also encourage our campus community to move beyond acknowledgment and toward intentional support:
-Learn the history
-Support AANHPI artists, authors, creators, and businesses
-Amplify voices and stories
-Engage in meaningful conversations
-Challenge stereotypes and anti-Asian hate
-Celebrate the beauty and diversity within AANHPI communities

The Office of Community and Belonging recognizes April as both Arab American Heritage Month and Genocide Awareness Month.

Arab American Heritage Month invites us to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Arab Americans and Arabic speaking communities across the United States.

Genocide Awareness Month calls us to pause, reflect, and honor the lives lost to past and ongoing genocides, while recommitting ourselves to awareness, education, and collective responsibility.

As we witness continued violence and humanitarian crises in the Middle East, Congo, Sudan, and beyond, this moment is especially important for our campus community to remain informed, compassionate, and engaged.

Where culture and connection meet, community grows. We invite you to learn, reflect, and stand in solidarity this month.

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Today we celebrate a day rooted in Irish history, culture, and heritage. March 17 marks the traditional date of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and over the centuries the day has grown into a global celebration of Irish pride, resilience, and community.

Across the world, people honor the day by wearing green, sharing traditional foods like corned beef and cabbage, soda bread, and shepherd’s pie, enjoying music and dance, and learning more about Ireland’s rich cultural traditions. The shamrock, one of the most recognized symbols of the holiday, is connected to the story of St. Patrick using it to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity.

However you choose to celebrate today through food, music, community gatherings, or simply learning something new about Irish heritage, we hope your day is filled with joy and good company.

Today we are wishing you all the luck of the Irish.

Tonight’s MLK event was nothing short of powerful. Dr. Ryan Davis opened with a deeply moving prayer that centered us in reflection and intention. Reverend Shantell Hinton then delivered a message filled with wisdom, truth, and hope—offering words that will sustain us in these challenging and uncertain times.

One message that continues to resonate:
“After the ash, must come resurrection.”

A reminder of renewal, resilience, and the promise that even in moments of loss or struggle, restoration is possible.

The Office of Community & Belonging was grateful to attend, support, and celebrate alongside our community. We are especially thankful to Student for Black Culture and the Department of Religious Life for hosting such a meaningful and affirming event.

February is Black History Month
National 2026 Theme: A Century of Black History Commemorations

This year marks 100 years of intentional Black history observances, rooted in the work of Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and the vision of Carter G. Woodson. What began as Negro History Week has grown into a global tradition of remembrance, scholarship, and celebration.

At Hendrix College, the Office of Community & Belonging affirms that Black history is foundational to our work. Honoring the past, affirming the present, and working for a more inclusive future is paramount to a better tomorrow.

Call to Action | There are many ways to celebrate this month—for everyone, even if you are not part of the Black diaspora:
• Learn Black history—intentionally and accurately
• Acknowledge the contributions of people who identify as Black to the global fabric
• Support current events and initiatives (locally and across the nation)
• Support Black-owned businesses
• Support and uplift Black labor
• Encourage and honor Black rest, because rest is revolutionary

OCB in collaboration with several student groups have several events planned throughout February. Stay tuned to our social media and join us all month long.
