Revisiting Our Wesleyan Roots - Day 6

We closely walked in Wesley’s shoes all day on Friday, beginning with Wesley Chapel. Here was - and still is - a hub for Methodist worship, ministry, and community, now claimed and celebrated by Methodists around the world. Here we saw John Wesley’s prayer room and his grave. We saw the commemorative monument for his “heart strangely warmed” experience on Aldersgate Street. Then we headed to St. Paul’s Cathedral for a guided tour of this beautiful national church, where a statue of John Wesley stands just outside. Our day concluded with an Evening Prayer service at St. Marlyborne Parish Church, where Charles Wesley and members of his family are buried. It was powerful to pray together for many needs and concerns around the world. That’s also where this unique Jesus-centered Exit sign was displayed. Saturday we head home, grateful for the journey, for the community, and the call.

Thanks to Katherine Lu with 417 Travel for coordinating this travel experience, to Brandon Bates for serving as trip leader, and to Lori Mulhearn for managing group details in prep and onsite.

Revisiting Our Wesleyan Roots - Day 5

It was a day of Thanksgiving, for sure, for many blessings and opportunities. A day of joy and wonder. A day of many, many steps! Our London guide Karen Dawson was terrific, teaching us much about Buckingham Palace and other royal, government, and religious sites, including Methodist Central Hall, located right across from Westminster Abbey. After lunch we spent time at the Tower of London and then rode the London Eye right after sunset. The views were stunning, near and far. In the evening we walked many streets, enjoying the festive decorations, the shopping, and the time together. Our last stop was the Lego store!

Revisiting Our Wesleyan Roots - Day 4

Continuing to follow the footsteps of John and Charles Wesley, we explored the ancient city of York, where the incredible Yorkminister, begun in the year 627, continues this day to be built anew across the centuries and generations. Our dynamic and knowledgeable guide Martyn took us along original Roman roads, city walls and fortresses up to 2,000 years old, and described history and influences that have shaped this region from then to now. We got to see the huge Yorkminister Christmas trees 🌲 🌲 being delivered, visited the unique and historic rail station, met up with Paddington Bear, and discovered echoes of Diagon Alley on the Shambles Road. Traveling the afternoon to London, we arrived to a city beautifully lit up for the holidays, and in the midst of all this learning of the past while dreaming of what is ahead, we found the perfect West End musical to see!!

Revisiting Our Wesleyan Roots - Day 3

Today we left Oxford and travelled to Epworth, which proudly claims “Home to the Wesleys.” Lunch together was lovely, and then we visited the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church to hear about their many active ministries with the community and other churches. Then a brisk walk to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, where Samuel Wesley was the priest when John and Charles were born. Outside St. Andrew’s is Samuel Wesley’s grave, atop of which son John Wesley preached one when barred from preaching at that church.
The Epworth Rectory was where the Wesley Family lived while raising a large family. We traveled to York to meet leaders of the Central Methodist Church who shared the history of this grand and amazing faith community, as well as some of how the British Methodist Church is connected and organized. Again, great supper together as friendships form and deepen, and we are off into the night of rest for more adventures tomorrow!

Revisiting Our Wesleyan Roots Day 2:
A bus ride to Bristol brought us to the New Room, with stirring words from David Worthington - ambassador for Wesleyan Heritage sites - about the importance of Bristol for the growth of the Methodist movement The New Room was a place where preachers and leaders were identified and trained by John Wesley, and sent forth with the gospel of care for body, mind, and spirit. You see that several in our group are exploring that call…. We toured the home of Charles Wesley, author of hundreds of hymns. Back in Oxford, we did some Christmas shopping, including the notable Blackwell’s Bookshop, and enjoyed a delicious, heartwarming meal. Here’s to a full day!

On Thursday, we celebrated Pentecost. We met with Rev. Natasha Murray and heard her call story to ministry, and why we should always celebrate the birthday of the church. We had a great time performing in Assembly’s Lip Sync Battle, and were surprised with a birthday cake to celebrate the church’s birthday!! We ended our last day with a candlelight service in the Greene Chapel.

On Wednesday, we celebrated Easter! We hunted for Easter eggs and talked about how the disciples carried on Jesus’s teachings after his resurrection. As a small group, we talked about how our faith in God has helped in our call to be servants in ministry.

On Tuesday, we started off our Lent and Holy Week celebrations. We practiced lent by completing the stations of the cross while reflecting on what Jesus’s final days on earth symbolized, and how Jesus’s prophecy came true. After talking about the significance of Ash Wednesday, we took a break and completed a scavenger hunt around Hendrix campus.

On Monday, we continued our liturgical calendar theme by celebrating Christmas!! It was a fun morning full of singing and dancing! We also had the opportunity to meet with a panel of elders, deacons, and lay members within the Arkansas United Methodist Conference who shared how they felt called to serve the church. We are so thankful for their messages of guidence and support for discerning a call to ministry within the United Methodist Church. While assembly kicked off, we wrapped up Christmas with some delicious treats and helped serve ice cream!
