- Black and Latino people have a higher prevalence of lupus and tend to experience more severe disease, including significantly higher rates of kidney involvement (lupus nephritis), compared to white patients.

- Social determinants of health—such as neighborhood disadvantage and socioeconomic barriers—directly impact disease management and make it harder for Black and Latino patients to achieve low disease activity.

- Cardiovascular events and mortality are disproportionately higher in both Black and Latino lupus patients, with mortality gaps persisting for Black individuals and spiking for Latino patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
