What do hula hoops have to do with molecules?

10/09/2026

It’s harvest season — so we started wondering: what would the Solar System look like if we compared its objects to things that grow here on Earth? 🎃

We picked a 30 cm pumpkin for the Sun and scaled every planet down by the same ratio.

The math is simple: divide each planet’s real diameter by the Sun’s diameter, then multiply by 300 mm.

Before anyone asks: what about Pluto? We didn’t forget it! It’s just tiny. At this scale, Pluto would be only about 0.5 mm across — about the size of a grain of sugar.

Have you ever tried comparing the Solar System to everyday objects? What did you use — or what would you like to compare it to? Share your ideas in the comments!

Thank you to Geology & Paleontology Professor Win for these great photos. Bird watching and plant identification on campus with Biology Professor Jason. Cyanotype printing with our Marine Biology Professor Amy. Students painted mini dinosaurs after talking about what dinosaurs could have looked like, picked teeny tiny shark tooth fossils out of ancient beach gravel, went on a hike with Chemistry Professor Derek and others at South Slough nature reserve, and made art with rocks to record their experiences at our annual STEAM Academy this week!
