A warning from the front lines of immigration law. Andrea Jacoski, associate director of Immigration Clinic - University of Miami School of Law, highlights the rise of scammers impersonating attorneys to exploit vulnerable immigrants. These schemes, powered by AI and social media, can lead to devastating consequences, from financial loss to missed hearings and deportation.

Immigration attorneys are having to take down sites and social media channels as scammers use AI, deepfakes and cloned domains to impersonate them and scam clients.

Decades after “Old Smokey,” the fight for justice continues in Miami’s West Grove. Miami Law Professors Douglas Ruley, director of the Environmental Justice Clinic, and Anthony Alfieri, founding director of the Center for Ethics and Public Service, are contributing to ongoing legal efforts on behalf of residents impacted by the former municipal incinerator. Their work supports a recently certified class action lawsuit seeking accountability for long-term environmental and public health harms.

The trash incinerator’s smokestack was demolished in 1974, but Old Smokey continues to cast a shadow over the lives of Grove residents who grew up near the City of Miami solid waste facility.
