What if learning to read felt like a game?

That's the idea behind LexiLearn, a virtual reality app developed by associate professor Anna Carolina Queiroz, Ph.D , alongside a team of students.

In the app, beginning readers step into a VR forest and throw apple letters to spell words, building the foundational phonics skills that research shows are critical to early literacy. AI personalizes the experience for each player, while a teacher dashboard tracks progress along the way.

This summer, LexiLearn heads into pilot programs, with hopes to expand into schools and education programs. Read more: bit.ly/49t5VqX

Commencement is a moment defined by beginnings that reflect on where the journey started and where it can lead. President Joe Echevarria’s journey is a full-circle example of that idea.

He arrived at the University of Miami at 17-years-old from the South Bronx, unsure of what came next or whether he belonged. An on-campus interview led to Deloitte, where he spent nearly four decades and ultimately became CEO. Today, he leads the University of Miami as President and CEO and serves as President of the University of Miami Health System.

In this conversation with Chief Marketing, Communications and Digital Officer Tanya Andreadis, President Echevarria reflects on that journey and the lessons that continue to shape how he leads today.
