Throughout her time as a cadet at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, Katherine Martin was consistently a top-performer. She made history this December by becoming the first woman to commission as an infantry officer from the Army ROTC Islander Battalion. This remarkable achievement was only possible through her unwavering dedication, perseverance, and commitment to serving her country.
After graduating from high school in Vail, Colorado where she was born and raised, she moved to Corpus Christi, TX to attend TAMU-CC with the goal of earning her commission and becoming a leader in the Army. During her time in ROTC, she stood out in numerous ways. She graduated the U.S. Army Air Assault school in June of 2023 and supported the Robin Sage special forces field training exercise in August of 2024. Within the program she participated in Ranger Challenge, Color guard, intramural sports, and the Bataan death march. She was selected as a Distinguished Military Graduate during CST Advance Camp 2025, in recognition of her outstanding performance and dedication. Additionally, while in college she earned her EMR certificate and worked as a beach first responder at Port A Surf Rescue. She graduated with honors, earning the distinction of magna cm laude. Her achievements and character demonstrate her ability to excel in a field that, until recently, was closed to women.
Second Lieutenant Martin’s next step will be attending Infantry Basic Officer Leadership Course (I-BOLC), one of the Army’s most challenging courses. There, she will continue to develop her skills while mastering tactics, weapons, and small-unit leadership, further testing her limits. Upon completing I-BOLC, she plans to attend Ranger School, the Army’s most difficult course. Here Soldiers learn how to lead while exhausted, hungry, in severe weather, and under immense pressure. Her story serves as an inspiration to other cadets and leaders alike, reminding us that great leadership is rooted in strong character and determination, and proof that with hard work and commitment ambitious goals are achievable.
