Justin and Rachel facing), who are YA4-H! members from Malheur County, present a project to show how seeds become plants through ‘gardening in a glove’, using a clear glove, cotton for soil and of course seeds. They were at one of the booths at the Four River Community Garden open house Saturday afternoon, which was promoting the growth of growing and eating vegetables and fruit. There were vegetables and fruit to sample, some of which was grown an the community garden, plants to take home and food, prepared from produce grown in the garden, to try, plus edible weeds.

The last day of school in Sherman County was the kick-off for a youth summer activities program, designed by local teens to encourage kids to get outside and explore local playgrounds and trails. Over 120 elementary students were given colorful t-shirts with the program motto, “Sherman Explore S’More” . This program gives local youth a checklist of various activities and fun things to do over the summer months, with gatherings in each town and prizes throughout the summer for participants. The monthly gatherings will focus on fun activities such as outdoor cookery, bikes and kites, and outdoor water play.

“Sherman Explore S’More” is led by 4-H members of the Youth Advocates for Health (YA4-H), in cooperation with OSU Sherman County Extension and the Eastern Oregon Center for Independent Living. YA4-H is a new program in a limited number of Oregon counties that engages youth in participatory health research and action. In Sherman County, the teens in the YA4-H club brainstormed to design this summer program to promote outdoor physical activity at local parks, trails, schools and other resources close to home.
