Oregon State University, Geography Oregon State University, Geography Program.

Geography is the study of human use and interaction with the Earth and the identification of spatial and temporal variation in natural and human processes. Geography uses principles of mathematics, social science, and natural science to analyze and interpret change in the environment. Geographers study globalization and cultural diversity, develop and apply geospatial technologies, and help evaluate and manage resources, climate change, and environmental hazards.

Snow depth is mapped across mountain watersheds because snowpack is a source of water supply, but full-basin airborne LiDAR maps are expensive and therefore collected infrequently. We ask whether we can “measure less and map more” by collecting snow-depth measurements within a swath across a basin and then using machine learning to estimate snow depth everywhere else.

From: Small, E. E., et al. including M. S. Raleigh. 2026. Measure less, map more: Using machine learning, physiography, and prior depth maps to extrapolate in-swath snow depth measurements across mountain basins. Geophysical Research Letters 53

With 2 km wide swaths, Swath-random forest (RF) estimates basin-wide snow depth with low bias (0.019 m) and RMSE (0.21 m) across 8 basins and 68 dates Using prior full-basin depth maps in trainin...

Join CEOAS experts Jenna Tilt and Felicia Olmeta Schult for an engaging lecture and Q&A session about the science, risks, and human dimensions of Cascadia’s most significant natural hazards.

Ever wonder what a major Cascadia earthquake and tsunami would mean for you? Do you want to learn more about preparedness and practical steps to be resilient with your community? Join two experts from Oregon State University in this upcoming Science Pub, and leave informed about the science, risks, and human dimensions of Cascadia's most significant natural hazards. Get your tickets here: https://bit.ly/3NjEJ6f

Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region, recommended for ages 10 and over.
