It is with very sad hearts that we share the news that Dr. Nancy Squires passed away Friday, June 19. This is a shock to all of us. She was a guide, a mentor, a friend, an example, a scholar, and an amazing person. We mourn her loss and will grieve with you.

As we think about how we can honor her and her legacy it is through you and your lives. She wanted each of us to reach our full potential and to make a difference in the world, in your community, and in your families. As we try to move forward, lets honor her in this way.

In due time, we will provide more information about celebrating her life, supporting her family, and trying to continue on her great work at Oregon State University. For now, let’s mourn and think of her family.

Please take care of yourself, as Dr. Squires would want, and reach out for help as needed (https://counseling.oregonstate.edu/). Students, you can also reach out to the advising team ([email protected]) or Dr. David Blunck ([email protected]).

With deepest sympathy,

Dr. David Blunck on behalf of The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering Leadership

Natasha Troxler () is a 2020 graduate in mechanical engineering.

“My fondest memory at OSU is difficult to choose as I have had many incredible opportunities here,” she said. “Working in the Student Services office in Johnson hall and helping with the events put on the College of Engineering were incredible experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed and will miss getting to interact with students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the COE in these capacities.”

She said she also enjoyed spending time in the shop or in Caliper Lounge working on projects and homework with peers. “I got to know some truly incredible people in my four years while working in the collaborative workspaces.”

Natasha is staying at Oregon State to work towards a Ph.D. in Robotics, starting out with a Masters of Engineering in Robotics first.

Colton Harms is a 2020 graduate in mechanical engineering with an aerospace engineering minor.

His fondest memories at Oregon State are: building high-powered rockets in the basement of Rogers Hall; performing propulsion research tests; and flying them at international competitions.

“My favorite part of my time in the College of Engineering was studying under Oregon State’s AIAA student branch and watching the school’s aerospace program grow exponentially during my time here,” he said. “This program and the upper-division aerospace courses by far played the largest role in preparing me for my future career and shaping my professional trajectory. Oregon State’s High Altitude Liquid Engine () project helped me attain three awesome internships, and reach my goal of working with commercial, orbital-class liquid rocket engines.”

Colton will be spending the summer at SpaceX, working on the Starship launch vehicle. He plans to return to Oregon State this fall for graduate school.

Safi Ahmad () is a 2020 graduate in industrial engineering with a minor in business and entrepreneurship.

His favorite memories from his time at Oregon State University are leading the Ettihad Cultural Festival to showcase the culture of South, Southwest, and Central Asia and Northern Africa to the OSU and Corvallis community as well as winning elections to serve as a Associated Students of Oregon State University Senator and Student Fee Committee Chair.

Safi said his favorite thing about the College of Engineering were there the relationships he made with peers, classmates, and professors. “Without those support groups, it would not have been possible to succeed in getting my degree,” he said.

Next for Safi is an internship with Genentech before looking for a job in the Portland area.

Ellie Parker is a 2020 graduate with an H.B.S. in Industrial Engineering.⠀

Ellie, who interned at NASA, will soon be commissioning into the U.S. Airforce as a Second Lieutenant, and then she’s off to pilot training.⠀

“Some of my fondest memories from Oregon State are my quiet early walks through campus to my ROTC workouts and roommates of four years who kept me sane through some crazy terms.”⠀

“I had an amazing opportunity for research through the College of Engineering to complete my honors thesis,” she said. “That was easily one of the most formative experiences I have had as an engineering undergrad.”
