How many scientists does it take to get LASSIE to Mars? 🚀🐾

A multidisciplinary coalition that includes researchers from Oregon State, NASA and other universities is working to find out. In August 2025, they tested the quadruped robot LASSIE — which stands for Legged Autonomous Surface Science in Analog Environments — at White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

The robot’s four-legged design allows it to adapt its movement as terrain shifts beneath its feet. But what’s also special about LASSIE is that researchers plan for it to be more than just a tool.

Cristina Wilson, a cognitive scientist in OSU’s College of Engineering, studies how robots and humans can work together to do science. Researchers hope robots like LASSIE will one day collaborate with astronauts as scientific teammates, helping them reason through their next moves as they study the surface of Mars.

We continue our National Photography Month series with Oregon State alumnus Roger Werth, ’80, whose photographs of the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens were part of the Longview Daily News’ Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the disaster.

As the first photojournalist to arrive at the scene, Werth captured striking images that later appeared across major news outlets as well as on the covers of National Geographic, Life and Time. His work was specifically commended by the Pulitzer committee.

A former Beaver yearbook photo editor, Werth spent his career as a staff photographer and later photo editor for the Longview Daily News.

For more than 50 years, Oregon State’s annual salmon bake has brought together students, alumni and the community each spring. What began in 1971 as a fundraiser for Native American student scholarships and a celebration of the spring salmon runs grew into a campus tradition centered on sharing culture and honoring history. This year’s salmon bake returns tomorrow, May 15.
