OREGON STATE ADVANCE was funded in the fall of 2014 as part of the National Science Foundation's ADVANCE program, which is aimed at increasing the participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers, thereby developing a more diverse science and engineering workforce. Oregon State is the recipient of an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation (IT) award, which is intend

ed to produce large-scale comprehensive change within our university. The primary goal of OREGON STATE ADVANCE is to serve as a catalyst for advancing the study and practice of equity, inclusion, and justice for women and others from historically underrepresented groups in the academy.

Behind Enemy Lines: Hidden Labor, Collective Care, and Strategies for Equity Within Resistant Systems explores the realities of justice-centered work during a time of increasing backlash against equity and inclusion efforts.

This special issue brings together research articles, personal narratives, and poetry that examine persistence, solidarity, resistance, care, and transformation across higher education and beyond.

These pieces honor the often-unseen labor of those working toward equity while imagining more just and liberatory futures.

The ADVANCE Journal is proud to have co-labored with so many researchers, scholars, leaders, faculty, and academic administrators toward ensuring gender equity throughout U.S. STEM higher education becomes and remains a reality. With the recent loss of our funding from the National Science Foundation, we have an opportunity to expand our network of collaborators and contributors even further!

We are seeking critical friends – from graduate students to administrators and beyond – who have the expertise, bandwidth, and capacity to join us as editors, reviewers, authors, presenters, social media influencers, and more! If you are interested in being a part of our resistance to the status quo, please complete the brief survey that follows. And help us keep the porchlight on!

ABOUT THE ADVANCE JOURNAL. The mission of the ADVANCE Journal is to provide a forum for publishing peer-reviewed scholarship related to institutional transformation concerning inclusion, equity, and justice in higher education. We seek submissions that address systems of oppression, intersectionality, and strategies for resistance and change in all fields of inquiry, and especially in STEM-focused disciplines. Additionally, we have an earnest desire to uplift the research and narratives of feminist scholars from other fields impacted by recent sociopolitical disturbances.

We’re Leaving the Porch Light On For You!

As editors of the ADVANCE Journal, we have been stunned and deeply saddened by the onslaught of attacks directed at higher education, science, and women of all races, cultures, and sexual orientations. But, make no mistake. We remain committed to ensuring that the research findings, project outcomes, artistic expressions, lived experiences, and voices of women in the academic STEM disciplines are well-documented in the peer-reviewed literature. Therefore, we’ve made the decision to continue production of the Journal indefinitely.

Although we are still accepting manuscripts, admittedly, our submission-to-publishing timeline over the next few months is likely to be slowed. It is our hope that this in no way discourages you from considering the ADVANCE Journal as a knowledge-generating platform for sharing your scholarly work. However, we understand if circumstances and conditions demand otherwise.

While we work to reconfigure, stabilize, and secure the structures and systems for accepting, reviewing, and publishing scholarly works related to gender equity in STEM, we are also establishing “sister” partnerships with other academic and popular journals and associations with interests similar to those of the ADVANCE Journal, whose publications timelines are faster than ours. Additionally, we are actively and urgently seeking like-minded individuals interested in assisting editors with reviewing and copyediting manuscripts as they are submitted.

We believe that now, perhaps more than ever, higher education needs an ADVANCE Journal. And we are determined to keep this Journal’s porch light on for as long as it takes for change to happen.
