This last month was Domestic violence awareness month and on October 17th and the 20th the Swcc criminal justice club held events. October 17th we had a speakers come and talk to us about what domestic violence is and how to prevent it. We had 28 students attended the event. October 20th we had a Domestic violence awareness walk where 40 college students went on a walk wearing purple to show support to survivors of domestic violence and to spread awareness.

Back on October 14th Swcc had its cte day. The swcc criminal justice club took a group of 103 students to show them the program and possible job opportunities. We had officers at the event to talk to the kids including a k9 officer, they got to work the MILO, and we had a crime scence for them to work through.

This month of October is Domestic violence awareness month and today the criminal justice club is putting on a event with speakers and advocates to talk about Domestic violence and dating violence. It will be held on the Swcc campus in room 220 in the IC building from 1pm to 3pm. It is open to teachers, school faculty and students.

On Wednesday, the Criminal Justice Club put together backpacks to send to kids in local communities as part of . These packages contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, toys and small trinkets, coloring books, books to read and stuffed animals to cuddle with. These packages will be sent out to various locations across Southwestern's region for kids to receive if they are victims of domestic violence. These packages were made possible from donations from Cindy Miller, Dr. Marjorie Welch (SWCC president), Haley Plowman, and various anonymous donors.

The SWCC Criminal Justice Club went to Build My Future at the Iowa State Fairgrounds today. We showed hundreds of high schoolers from all over Iowa our MILO simulation, did some finger printing, impaired vision goggles, and talked to them about the Criminal Justice program at Southwestern. We were also accompanied by Deb Peterson from admissions. Thanks to everyone who came & learned more about our CJ program today! 🔴🔵🔴🔵

Earlier this week we had an opportunity to go talk to Red Oak High School’s iJAG program. It was a hands-on experience to educate them on what SWCC Criminal Justice Program is all about. We presented a crime scene scenario, and the Red Oak students participated in learning how to do fingerprinting when working the crime scene.

Yesterday, the Criminal Justice Program welcomed Trooper Darren Flaherty and Sergeant Alan Anderson of the Iowa State Patrol. Flaherty and Anderson talked to students about what they do on the job, why they chose the Iowa State Patrol, and how to become a State Trooper. Thank you Officer Flaherty and Sergeant Anderson, and to all of the Iowa State Trooper’s for keeping us safe
