Did you know that food waste accounts for about 22% of all of the solid waste material in landfills in the United States? As landfilled food waste breaks down it generates methane, a greenhouse gas that's much more potent than carbon dioxide. Composting is a great alternative for disposing of food waste. It not only produces a nutrient-rich fertilizer that can be added back into the food system, but also helps to conserve water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. There are so many ways to participate in composting - (if applicable- edit for location specific) in our campus dining operations, a backyard tumbler, a community collection site, or even residential pickup programs.
