At the end of this semester I will be retiring from my position as Professor of Environmental Science and Chair of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Department at Doane University. I have decided to step down and take advantage of Doane’s retirement Voluntary Separation Incentive Program.

My twenty-nine years of teaching, service, and research at my alma mater have been extraordinary. It has been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to teach and mentor so many talented students. I want to extend my thanks to faculty the administration for their support and for allowing me to be a part of this remarkable institution. I look forward to staying in touch and wish Doane continued success in the future.

In winter many Nebraska birds seek out roosting sites to stay warm and conserve energy. Common roosting sites include dense foliage, tree cavities, and man-made structures like barns and sheds.

The Doane student Wildlife and Conservation Organization (WACO) along with the Nebraska Wildlife Federation, Sueper Construction, and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Department constructed winter bird roosting boxes in the campus center to provide safe winter roosting sites for our winter birds.

Enjoy these photos showing students constructing the shelters. Some even decorated their shelter boxes!

Dalton Whisenhunt, Doane Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences major with the Agriscience Systems emphasis, is working on a summer research project dealing with pesticides. The pressing question of how we can ensure agricultural efficiency while also limiting our impact on the environment led him to the topic of integrated crop management.

AMVAC BioWake Prime uses the microbe Methylorubrum extorquens, these microbes prime the crops natural defense system which releases a natural chemical that both prevents and confuses natural corn rootworm feeding. Dalton's results will be available this fall and will provide an understanding of the biological’s efficiency at preventing corn rootworm feeding. This project is being done at the facilities of Norder Supply near Fremont, Nebraska.

Over the past several months Doane faculty and students, as well as members of the Crete community and schools, have been working on a Wildlife Coloring Book that features Nebraska wildlife and includes their names in Spanish. It's now available as a free download at doane.edu/coloringbook. Free print copies will also be available to Crete youth.

This has been a wonderful project and a result of a collaboration between persons from Doane and the Crete community. It provides opportunities for families and friends to go outdoors and learn more about the wildlife illustrated in the coloring book. It also serves as a cultural and learning connection between people and nature.

Students and faculty in Doane art and graphic design classes prepared the art work and overall design. Students and faculty in a Doane Spanish class developed the wildlife name translations.
