**The Crow Custer Scouts: Challenging the Stereotypes of Liars, Cowards, and Traitors**

**Join us in person or online via Facebook Live or Zoom.**

For nearly 150 years, the six Crow scouts who served with Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn have been subjected to stereotypes portraying them as liars, cowards, and traitors.

These accusations began circulating shortly after the battle, spreading through soldiers aboard the *Far West* steamboat and eventually appearing in newspapers and historical accounts. Crow scout Curley became one of the most prominent targets of these claims.

Col. Rodney G. Thomas will examine how these stereotypes developed, how they shifted responsibility for the battle's outcome away from Custer and the U.S. Army, and how they continue to shape perceptions of the Crow scouts today.

Col. Thomas has dedicated years to researching the Crow scouts and is the author of the 2022 biography *Bíilaachia–White Swan: Crow Warrior — Custer Scout — American Artist*.

This program will be given this Thursday September 24th at noon in the Library Programs Room by Dale Old Horn is an elder from the Black Lodge district, and emeritus/retired professor of Crow and Native American Studies at MSU-B and LBHC.

His presentation will cover some of the most restrictive assimilationist policies the US ever imposed on Native peoples. It outlawed religious practices among tribes, including sacred dances and the leadership of medicine men, plural marriage and practices surrounding property ownership.

Punishment for these offenses included, withholding of rations, hard labor, fines, and jail time. The practice of outlawing religious practices among Indigenous people in the United States legally persisted until 1978 with the passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA). Dale’s family was instrumental in the passage of the act.
