From classroom concepts to global industry 🌍⚙️

During the summer faculty-led ENGR 365 + HIST 308 course across Bulgaria, Turkey, and Greece, WCU students stepped inside world-class production environments and discovered how engineering drives real-world impact.

Highlights from Bulgaria included:
🔹 FESTO: exploring cutting-edge surface mount device (SMD) assembly for electronics
🔹 Sensata Technologies: seeing how sensors are built and tested for extreme conditions and critical applications
🔹 BioFresh: blending tradition and technology from rose oil cosmetics to robotic conveyor systems (and even making our own soap!)
🔹 Schneider Electric: learning about switch production with very high reliability and high voltage/current/power rating

These visits showcased the global reach of engineering and gave students a deeper appreciation for how innovation impacts our everyday lives. We extend our gratitude to all of our hosts for their generosity, expertise and commitment to student learning.

Meet Caleb Cole from the residential Engineering Technology M.S.E.T. program! Caleb was one of the students who traveled with the Graduate School to Raleigh last month to participate in Graduate Education Day hosted by the North Carolina Council of Graduate Schools (NCCGS). Caleb met with a number of representatives throughout the day to discuss his research "Exploring Sustainable Practices for Managing 3D Printing Waste,” which he also presented at RASC earlier in the Spring. Caleb will be a two-time WCU graduate when he graduates in December!

It was fun to see Western Carolina University Continuing Education and Summer Programs LEGO Camp campers building, creating, exploring, and laughing here on campus last week! Some of our student ambassadors, faculty, and staff from the Engineering Discovery program joined in the fun too, helping these future innovators with everything from block programming to homemade helicopters. 💜💛

Experiences like this remind us of the joy of building and the spark that starts a lifelong passion for engineering and problem-solving.

When their only electrical engineering student left mid-project, this ENGR 350 student team didn’t quit — they adapted. 💡

From learning to solder to tackling circuits and coding this, the group relied on teamwork and built a turbidity monitoring device with real-world impact on water quality monitoring.

Their biggest takeaway? Adaptability is everything.
