Gaining Diverse Perspectives: How Archives Can Support Your Professional Life!

May 16, 6pm to 7pm
Virtual! Zoom link in story.

You may not immediately equate archives and oral histories to your professional success, but they have many practical applications. The life stories of members of our WNC community can provide information germane to all professions and create unique inlets to community engagement and cohesion. Through local interviews, listeners can gain a rare view into topics like inclusion, diversity, perspective-taking, intersectionality, and the past, present and future of Western North Carolina.

Join representatives from Hunter Library and Sylva Pride on Monday, May 16, at 6pm to learn how local archives and non-profits can help you and your colleagues. We will consider how these materials apply to all fields of graduate study at WCU.

Our current President(!), Dawson Spencer, talks about what he likes about his position:

“Being apart of something bigger than myself while still making a noticeable impact has been an honor. I’ve gotten to work with my fellow GSA members to advocate for all WCU grad students, and been privy to ongoings of the inner workings of WCU as well. I’ve highly enjoyed my time as GSA President, and sincerely recommend it!”

Dawson’s President role is open next year- apply now!!! Last chance!

It’s me!! The current Vice President of Public Relations, also known as Jay Vincent. Here’s what I likes about my position:

Being a grad student is a full time job itself, but I still like to be involved in the graduate community, so working with GSA made perfect sense. I get to practice graphic design, brand marketing, and customer service, all without being overwhelmed.

My VP of Public Relations role is open next year- apply now!

Our current Vice President of Travel and Finance, Jacob Lowman, talks about what he likes about his position:

“I like my position because it has a lot of administrative work that well fits my busy class schedule. I have strengthened my skills in budget management and communication. I also gained knowledge about how public institutions work their finances. I also like this position because my staff is very open to changing and improving processes (within reason).”

Our current Chief of Staff, Thomas Hennessey, talks about what he likes about his position:

“It's very flexible in what you do without being too much work or too demanding socially. You learn about what everyone else is doing and I've definitely strengthened my organization and communication skills a bit by being the meeting notekeeper and generally on call for everyone. You also talk to a variety of people in the grad school and learn more about both campuses regardless of which one you're on. Generally, chief of staff gets to learn about the inner workings of events and funding without being entirely responsible for any one thing, so it's very doable while also completing a thesis.”

Thomas Hennessey’s Chief of Staff role is open next year- apply now!

Our current Vice President of Diversity & Inclusive Excellence, Kathleen Blackney, talks about what she likes about her position:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with graduate students from other programs, areas, and backgrounds made possible by being a part of the GSA team! As a working student, it can be hard to get outside of your own responsibilities-bubble; joining GSA has given me an incredibly valuable pathway to connect with the experiences, priorities, and needs of fellow grad students with whom I otherwise would have never interacted. Acting as the Vice President of Diversity & Inclusive Excellence, in particular, has challenged me to push my comfort zone outside of those interests toward which I had a pre-existing awareness or relationship, to educate myself on larger contexts of community and identity in the WCU community. I'm grateful for the learning experiences this has brought, and the opportunity to act as a conduit for sharing this awareness with other students!”

Kathleen Blackney’s VP DEI role is open next year- apply now!

Our current BP Liaison, Megan Hutchinson, talks about what she likes about her position:

“As BP Liaison, I enjoyed planning and contributing to events on campus such as Winter Coffee and Cocoa bar, Valentine’s Day cards, Halloween cookie decorating, and Kindness Week. In addition, I enjoy collaborating with BP’s office as well as my fellow GSA members to increase student engagement and find resources to benefit the student body.”
