Back early in February, four of our student members wrote a reader’s theater, “Tater Eyes and 'Possum Houses,” and performed at Walters State College in Morristown, TN at the Mildred Haun Conference. The performance is a part of the project, Saving Appalachian Gardens and Stories, an initiative that preserves and promotes agro-biodiversity in the Southern Appalachians. Students collect, grow, bank, and share heirloom seeds and related stories.

Knit Bombing went swell today at the first club meeting of spring! While some people took the time to learn how to cast on, others finished a few rows of knitting! Soon we'll be "bombing" the Vickery House fence! Thanks to those who came out and to Cat for being patient while teaching us! Our next meeting will be the first Monday of February (the 3rd), and we're planning a trip to the Sautee Nacoochee Center that week as well for a storytelling event! Email [email protected] for more info!

Don't forget to join us tomorrow at the Vickery House during the meeting hour!

This is the culmination of all their hard work, the event they have been striving for all semester. Wish them luck!

As a student of Appalachian Studies at the University of North Georgia, I can attest to the vital importance and far-reaching benefits of an Appalachian Studies Center. An Appalachian Studies Center serves as a bridge between the community and an ever-growing university, connecting students with the place and community that they thrive within. It is committed to service learning opportunities, encouraging students to engage in hands-on projects that benefit both the university and the community. Appalachian Studies is a novel academic field and therefore presents career-defining opportunities for student scholarship.
Our Appalachian Studies Center at the University of North Georgia is the reason that I, as an undergraduate, am published in a peer-reviewed journal, and the reason that I, as an undergraduate, have presented at two national conferences and one international conference. There is great academic value in having such an interdisciplinary institution. It not only teaches students collaboration, but allows them the opportunity to place their studies in a broader context that extends not only beyond their subject or school, but provides a regional and even global context for their education. Radford University, your institution and your students will suffer a great loss if you do not reinstate your Appalachian Studies Center.
