As a student of Appalachian Studies at the University of North Georgia, I can attest to the vital importance and far-reaching benefits of an Appalachian Studies Center. An Appalachian Studies Center serves as a bridge between the community and an ever-growing university, connecting students with the place and community that they thrive within. It is committed to service learning opportunities, encouraging students to engage in hands-on projects that benefit both the university and the community. Appalachian Studies is a novel academic field and therefore presents career-defining opportunities for student scholarship.
Our Appalachian Studies Center at the University of North Georgia is the reason that I, as an undergraduate, am published in a peer-reviewed journal, and the reason that I, as an undergraduate, have presented at two national conferences and one international conference. There is great academic value in having such an interdisciplinary institution. It not only teaches students collaboration, but allows them the opportunity to place their studies in a broader context that extends not only beyond their subject or school, but provides a regional and even global context for their education. Radford University, your institution and your students will suffer a great loss if you do not reinstate your Appalachian Studies Center.
