“I’m grateful. Dallas College has been part of my life for more than two decades, first as a student and now as an employee. The institution helped shape my future, and I’ve had the privilege of helping students pursue their own goals in return." - Erbin Ayala, Dallas College alumni and success coach.

Tell us your story.
“My family moved from California to Mesquite in the early 2000s. The move gave me a fresh start, and I experienced a complete academic turnaround. Eastfield became my home campus, and in many ways, it still feels like home. I graduated during the 2008 recession. I found myself searching for direction. Then I became an instructor for youth camps. Working with young people opened my eyes to education in a way I had never considered before. That experience planted a seed.

“Today, I’m a success coach at Dallas College, helping students navigate their educational and career pathways. I’ve come full circle.”

Where do you find the motivation to keep going?
“A lot of that comes from my family. My parents immigrated to the United States after fleeing the civil war in El Salvador. They taught me the value of hard work from an early age, and that work ethic has stayed with me throughout my life."

What brings you the most fulfillment?
“Much of my work involves helping nontraditional students navigate their educational journey and helping people realize their potential. You don’t go into higher education because you’re chasing financial success. You do it because you want to make a difference. For me, it’s about giving back."

How has your experience as a Dallas College student influenced the way you approach your work today?
“I think a lot about the people who helped me when I was a student. As a success coach, you’re not just helping an individual student. You’re helping a family. You’re helping future generations. The impact of education extends far beyond the person sitting across from you. That’s something I never lose sight of.”

“You’re always a student of something. Every stage of life, you're always learning from situations. Let that drive you.” - Mason, Engineering student Dallas College. Read his inspiring story below:

You’re very involved with TRIO, a student support service offered at colleges to provide students with academic help and assistance, and it seems like you found a home here. What do you think contributed to that?

"What I think contributed to it was really finding myself. TRIO provides all the tools and support necessary to succeed at the college level, all for free! Getting into college made me think that it was all proper and professional. TRIO completely changed that for me. They taught me that college isn't just a place to find what you want to do, but to learn how to express yourself in a world that you couldn't before. TRIO was just a catalyst for the self-confidence I have now. The more that I grew into my college time with them, the more I grew into myself and the person I am today.”

What happened in high school that made you say, 'Yeah, I want to go for engineering'? How did you get to that point?

"So, in my high school, we were put into pathways based on our interests. There was engineering, health science, aerospace. There were a lot of different branches, but I was put into aviation. My friends and I had worked at an airport as well. It was Dallas Executive Airport. I got an internship over there, and it was really cool work, really awesome seeing everything. Then I volunteered at the airport as well because they had these air shows and workshops tailored to kids. They had these veteran events as well. But I got the interest in it from the internship and growing up in that environment in high school."

What legacy do you want to leave behind?

"What I'd want to leave behind are the connections. To make other people around me better because it's worked for my workplace. It's like my presence is enough to be in that — it just feels like nurturing or caring. So, just to bring that kind of effect wherever I am and just for it to be there, I think that's the legacy I want."
