On Friday, August 14, the Center for Excellence in World Arts (CEWA) community gathered for a special moment of thanksgiving and praise as they prepared to move from their longtime home on the ILC campus to a new space in the Mahler building.

For more than a decade, the CEWA space has been filled with music, creativity, learning, prayer, laughter, and countless memories. The Avery Room, named in honor of Tom Avery, a pioneer in Ethnodoxology and World Arts, became a special gathering place for the CEWA community. It was a space where music was made, art was created, classes were taught, workshops were held, and important milestones were celebrated.

Bringing a Legacy of Translation to DIU’s Indonesia Program

We are happy to announce that Dr. Larry Jones has joined our faculty to teach a Bible Translation course in DIU’s joint program in Indonesia. Dr. Jones comes to us with a unique blend of translation experience, years of administrative background, and giftings in teaching. Most importantly, he is fluent in Indonesian and understands the culture of our Indonesian students.

Larry and his wife began serving with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Indonesia in the 1980’s. They worked on the Yawa language, which was previously an unwritten language. The Joneses conducted in-depth linguistic research, which led to creating a Yawa alphabet. This linguistic work laid the foundation for translating the New Testament in Yawa. Larry became the Indonesia Branch Director in 1991, while continuing to work remotely on the Yawa translation with his wife and their Indonesian colleagues. Larry helped navigate the closing of the SIL Indonesia branch in the late 1990’s. Larry was then chosen to serve as the Asia Area Director for SIL. He coordinated translation-related work in the many Asian countries where SIL served. He and his wife also kept the Yawa translation work going in addition to his administrative duties. The Yawa New Testament was completed in 2011.

In 2008, Larry joined Seed Company , where he oversaw their Bible Translation department. His focus was supervising their translation consultants around the world. Later, Larry served as a Translation Consultant for SC. He was then appointed as President of The Seed Company from 2020-2024 before retiring later that year. DIU is honored to have a man of Larry’s caliber serving on our faculty.

Welcome Larry!
