Today, we celebrate a profound legacy of love, leadership, and excellence.

On May 25, 1918, a historic union took place between two foundational figures of the Divine Nine: Frank Coleman, a distinguished Founder of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Mary Edna Brown, a visionary Founder of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Long before they became husband and wife, both were student leaders at Howard University breaking barriers, uplifting their community, and setting a standard for generations to follow. Their love story was more than personal; it became woven into the very fabric of Black Greek-letter history.

The Coleman legacy represents the beautiful intersection of friendship, scholarship, service, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Their union serves as a timeless reminder of the deep historic bonds that connect our organizations and the enduring power of purpose driven love.

Today, we honor and celebrate the incredible legacy of Frank Coleman and Mary Edna Brown Coleman truly defining the meaning of a “Power Couple.

A beautiful and grounding reminder: while the three day weekend is a welcome break, the true heart of Memorial Day lies in that quiet reflection honoring the individuals who selflessly stepped up and gave everything for the freedoms we live out every single day. It's a debt we can never fully repay, but keeping their memory alive and expressing that deep gratitude is a powerful way to honor them. Wishing you a meaningful, peaceful, and reflective Memorial Day.

Moving History, Preserving Our Legacy!

Today, the brothers of the Sigma Nu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. proudly demonstrated our commitment to community service by assisting in the preservation of a vital piece of local history.

We were honored to collaborate with the Baldwin County Training School Heritage Fest Foundation/Black Education Museum in Daphne, Alabama a site that stands as a testament to the resilience, strength, and enduring legacy of Black education on the Eastern Shore.

A Brief Overview of the History We Are Uplifting

• 1874: The journey began with the establishment of one teacher schools in Daphne, Jonesboro, and Montrose.
• 1889: Rev. S. B. Bracy and the Eastern Shore Missionary Baptist Association acquired a 10 acre plot to build a two-room private school known as the Eastern Shore Baptist Academy for Negroes.
• 1915: The land was deeded for public education, becoming the Eastern Shore Industrial School (Grades 1–9).
• 1927: The school officially became Baldwin County Training School, proudly serving as the county’s only Black high school (Grades 1–12).
• 1941: The iconic Vocational Building, featured in the historic archives, was constructed.
• 1972: The institution transitioned into Daphne Middle School under a unified school system.

From a two room private academy in 1889 to a cornerstone of education and a modern day museum, this legacy remains invaluable to our community.

As Omegas, uplifting our community and honoring those who paved the way before us is not only our duty it is our privilege.

Early literacy creates lifelong advantages. When children are introduced to books before they ever step into a classroom, they’re not just hearing stories they’re building the foundation for learning, imagination, and future success. A book today can become a child’s permanent head start tomorrow.

The Brothers of ΣΝΝ are proud to support our community’s future leaders through this book initiative at Eastern Shore Academy of Excellence. Stop by, take a book, or give a book and help us continue planting seeds that will grow for generations to come.

Thank you to Eastern Shore Academy of Excellence for allowing ΣΝΝ the opportunity to serve and invest in our youth.
