At St. Ambrose University, we challenge our students to act courageously and lead lives of service. OTD student Britney recently put those values into action by serving as an NMDP stem cell donor.

As future occupational therapists, our students are committed to helping people participate in the activities and roles that give life meaning. Britney's decision to donate reflects that same commitment—supporting another person's opportunity to spend more time with family, celebrate more milestones, and continue engaging in the occupations that matter most to them.

After joining the donor registry through a simple cheek swab, Britney was matched with a patient in need of a lifesaving transplant. Her willingness to help a complete stranger demonstrates the compassion, service, and dedication to others that are at the heart of both occupational therapy and the Ambrosian mission.

Thank you, Britney, for representing the OTD program and our mission so well.

Allison Fellner, SAU OTD ‘26, completed a capstone experience that exemplifies what sets OTD programs apart.

Through advanced training and hands-on leadership, she addressed a critical community need—reducing drowning risk and increasing access to adaptive swim programs for children with autism. After earning her Adaptive Swim Instructor certification (levels 1–4), Allison developed comprehensive, evidence-based resources including screening tools, outcome measures, and a structured swim skill intervention framework using visual, auditory, and tactile supports.

At Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center, she didn’t just participate—she led. Under the mentorship of Lauren Coyne, Community Adaptive Services Coordinator and Manager, Allison helped design and implement an adaptive swim curriculum, educated aquatic professionals on OT’s role, and helped grow the program from just 3 swimmers to 25 during her 14-week rotation. Her impact continues as she plans to step into her new role as an adaptive swim instructor, advancing inclusive, community-based programming.

This is the power of doctoral-level occupational therapy education—driving innovation, leadership, and meaningful change in real-world settings. Way to go Allison!
