Join us this coming Monday (9/7) at 7:30pm for "displacement," a concert of works by Jia Yi Lee and Conner Singh VanderBeek, that explores the manifold meanings of being displaced, whether through the continual movement of the body from place to place or through more abstract processes like refraction, attraction and repulsion, and fragmentation. Works for solo instrumentalists, tape, and video confront the physical and psychological ramifications of having to continually be moved and removed – and the inevitable distortions and transformations wrought by such displacements.

As we begin a new school year, welcoming new and returning students and filling our rehearsal rooms with music again, we are also remembering Dolly and the extraordinary life she shared through song and doing good.

We’re glad to share this performance of her "Light of Clear Blue Morning," arr. Craig Hella Johnson, sung by the Davidson College Chorale in October of 2025, featuring Beckett Ledahl ’27.

With gratitude for Dolly. Here’s to clear blue mornings ahead.

This summer, senior Emma Walsh had the privilege of attending Songfest, a prestigious Young Artist program under the direction of Grant Knox at Furman University. Songfest is an intensive for singers and pianists to work together on masterclasses, concerts, and coachings while examining poetry, diction, and performance possibilities with professional artists. Over the course of three weeks, Emma worked alongside Martin Katz, Jamie Barton, Adriana Zabala, Tom Cipullo, and more, attending and singing in masterclasses and concerts that spanned Nordic and Afrikaans repertoire to American folk songs and the works of Tom Cipullo. She eagerly performed in multiple concerts, such as Songs of Resilience, a concert of songs and spirituals curated by Tyrese Byrd; an Afrikaans art song lecture recital curated by Bronwen Forbay, an expert in Afrikaans; and American Tune, a commemoration of pivotal milestones in our nation's history through the lens of American song, curated by Adriana Zabala. She was overwhelmed by the support and kindness of everyone she worked with in this program and feel so grateful to be part of such a special group of upcoming artists. Emma states this opportunity would not have been possible without the generous support of the Davidson College Music Department; their investment in her artistry and development is ever meaningful.

For the final day of the Davidson College Chamber Singers 2026 Germany tour, they attended the Schloss Balmoral Workshop "Alchemy and Heimat" where each artist did a presentation/workshop for the other artists. Just after lunch, it was the Chamber Singers's turn to tie together singing, alchemy, and Heimat (home, homeland, or native country). The students did a fantastic job and are now rewarded with a relaxing evening at Emser Therme.

Though our time in Germany has come to an end, the memories and friendships will last a lifetime. From Paderborn, to Cologne, to Koblenz, to Bad Ems, and all places between, the tour was an overwhelming success with building upon our relationship with Deutschland. Vielen Dank für alles! 🇩🇪🇺🇸🎼🎶❤️
