Davidson College Collegium Musicum

Davidson College Collegium Musicum We are an 8-12 member student-led ensemble from the Davidson College Chorale in the Music Department specializing in music from the Renaissance & Baroque.

A select student-led ensemble between eight and sixteen members drawn from Davidson College Chorale in the Music Department. Collegium specializes in (but is not limited to) music of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Collegium Musicum had very humble beginnings, starting with only a few practices a month in whatever practice room or lounge we could find. Back then, it wasn’t so much a performi

ng group as it was an interest group. We did not even have an official name. We simply called ourselves “The Madrigals”. And that was the music we were most interested in singing, hence our first self-proclaimed name. All of us had at one point in our lives been a part of the Davidson College Chorale, but were interested in having more time in our lives to sing choral music together. And so we gathered together as friends, each with a strong interest in Renaissance a capella music and the ability to confidently sight-read and sing. For more information, we invite you to visit:

Meet Martin Malotky, a Senior baritone from Greensboro, North Carolina who sings in the Davidson College Chorale, part of the Davidson College Choirs, directed by Christopher Gilliam, and Davidson College Collegium Musicum! Martin's poetry on the theme of fire was chosen by Thomas LaVoy - Composer for a piece commissioned by Dr. Gilliam for Chorale that will be performed in this Friday's elements-themed Chorale concert. A philosophy and French double major, Martin finds himself captivated by how people communicate with each other. This interest inspired the words to his poem, and in a collaboration with LaVoy, the piece entitled “Let My Words be Fire” was born. The piece uses the simultaneously destructive and unifying ability of fire as a metaphor to convey how communication can reshape and transform perspectives and bring people together.

Martin is a voice student of Ilana Lubitsch and will also be appearing in next week’s Opera Workshop. He has found a true family within the Chorale and immerses himself in music throughout his everyday life—in fact, you can probably find him singing as he walks around campus! Thank you for sharing your creative talent with us, Martin, we look forward to hearing your piece performed this Friday in the Chorale Concert: Elemental!.
