An invasive reptile is quietly expanding its range across the Florida Everglades, The Croc Docs based at UF IFAS Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center are working to understand what that means for one of the world’s most important restoration projects.

A new study synthesizes more than 70 years of research on the spectacled caiman, a species native to Central and South America that is now established in parts of South Florida. Researchers say key questions remain about how the species may interact with native wildlife and ongoing Everglades restoration efforts.

Scientists are continuing to track caiman movements, study nesting behavior, and develop new tools to detect emerging populations. Public reports of sightings can also help researchers and wildlife managers better understand where the species is spreading.

If you spot a spectacled caiman, report it through the IveGot1 app, by calling 1-888-IVEGOT1, or through EDDMapS. Learn more 🔗 tr.ee/AnPnfOa0mK

It’s International Day for Biological Diversity! 🌎🐊

On this day we celebrate the amazing species that make up our planets biodiversity. Here at the Croc Docs, we have the privilege to work alongside two crucial indicator species: the American alligator and American crocodile.

In the Greater Everglades Ecosystem, these two species pay a large role shaping landscapes and controlling prey populations. Along with this, scientists use crocs and gators as indicator species, allowing us to gauge the overall health of the wetlands they inhabit. Without the insight brought by crocs and gators, scientists and wildlife managers would have less tools to help protect and restore habitat for the hundreds of other species inhabiting Florida’s marshes, swamps, and estuaries.

With long term conservation efforts, both species have been able to come back from the brink of extinction - with American alligators being of least concern and American crocodiles being downgraded from endangered to threatened by the IUCN!

Behind the scenes action! 🐊 We’re excited to have been part of the film - The Everglades: A Symphony of Life!

Premiered on YouTube - South Florida PBS (WPBT) on February 18 at 8:00 PM, and will be followed by a national PBS broadcast on April 15.

"The Everglades is unlike any other place on Earth—a vast river of grass alive with beauty and resilience. Like a symphony, the Everglades ecosystem depends on every element moving in balance—when one part falls out of tune, the entire ecosystem feels the impact. Through sweeping cinematography, evocative orchestral music, and the voices of those who live and work there, this documentary tells the story of how people are working to restore this system so the whole system can thrive. Meet wildlife rehabilitators, environmental scientists, fishing captains, invasive species specialists, and members of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, all playing a vital role in restoring balance to this fragile ecosystem.

Featuring South Florida’s world-class New World Symphony performing Umoja by Grammy Award–winning composer Valerie Coleman, the film serves as a reminder of the positive impact that humans can have and that the Everglades—and our natural spaces—are worth fighting for, now and for generations to come.
Check your local listings for when to watch!"
