This week’s spotlight is about a second year student with an emphasis in Applied Biological Systems Technology, Samantha Cisneros! 👩🏻🏭🌱
Where are you from?
- The Capay Valley
What has been your favorite course so far?
- I initially came to Davis as an Animal Science major but after learning more about the Ag Ed major I was drawn to the variety of courses across different areas of agriculture which made the major feel like a much better fit for me. My favorite courses so far have been the lower division ABT classes. They’re hands on, promote critical thinking and problem-solving, and foster a collaborative learning environment. The environment is fun and engaging with an instructor who’s always willing to help and TA’s who definitely enhance the overall educational experience.
Are you planning on teaching?
- I am planning on going into teaching, I’d love to be a high school shop teacher. I believe that not every student is meant to follow the traditional college path and that’s totally okay. I want to be the kind of teacher who shows students that there are other awesome options out there like trades, certifications, or jumping straight into a career they’re passionate about. More than anything, I want to be a supportive voice for the student who often get overlooked and help them see that their path is just as valuable and full of opportunity.
What would you say to future Ag Ed majors?
- My advice would be to ask questions and get involved. The smaller class sizes are a great opportunity to get to know your professors and classmates, so take advantage of that. Once you find something you’re passionate about, look for ways to get involved whether it’s volunteering, internships, or a job. It’s all about gaining experience and making the most of your time here!
