Meet our Public Health Minor Peer Advisor!

Hello, my name is Abigayle Seeberg, I'm an Anthropology major and minoring in Medieval and Religious Studies, and I'm from Nevada City, CA. I choose UC Davis because of the community, the campus and because of the steps that UC Davis is taking in order to make an impact on their community and the world.

I am a student assistant which means that I meet with and advise students who are interested in the minor that is offered with the Public Health Sciences. Some of my daily tasks are replying to students inquiries, forwarding emails for the MPH program and assisting students in the Public Health Sciences in any way that I can. I wanted to work for the Public Health Education office because I wanted to help students reach their goals, feel proud of themselves and to help better their experience while at UC Davis.

Some of my hobbies are reading, playing video games, trying different coffee shops and taking pictures of all of the beautiful things around campus.

If you're interested in meeting with Abigayle to discuss the Public Health minor, check out this link to schedule an appointment: https://lettersandscience.ucdavis.edu/major-and-minor-advising

🌟 Faculty Feature: Diana Miglioretti, Ph.D.
Public Health Sciences / Biostatistics Professor & Division Chief of Biostatistics

Meet Dr. Diana Miglioretti, a Public Health Sciences Professor, and the Division Chief of Biostatistics. Inspired by her own family history, she dedicated her career to improving the early detection of breast cancer and advancing research that can save lives.

Dr. Miglioretti specializes in breast cancer screening, cancer risk prediction modeling, understanding radiation exposure from medical imaging and it’s connection to cancer risk. Her work ensures that screening practices are both effective and safe for patients everywhere.

She chose UC Davis for the exceptional environment for cancer research, as UC Davis is home to a strong comprehensive cancer center as well as a diverse, collaborative faculty community.

Dr. Miglioretti hopes students walk away from her classroom with the ability to think critically, a skill that lies at the heart of impactful research. Her advice for students pursuing biostatistics: “As a biostatistician, it is helpful to develop expertise in one or two applied areas so that you can make more informed contributions.”
Something that students may be surprised to learn about is that Dr, Miglioretti is a first-generation college graduate!

Outside of her career, she loves running, hiking, mountain biking, pickleball, yoga, cooking, and baking sourdough bread. One of her favorite quotes is: “Don’t believe everything you think.”

We’re so proud to have her guiding the next generation of public health scholars at UC Davis!

🌟 Faculty Feature Friday: Jake Pry, MPH, Ph.D.
Assistant Adjunct Professor - Public Health Sciences

Meet Dr. Jake Pry, an epidemiologist whose path into public health began with an unexpected change in plans! He originally set out to become a physician, but conversations with many different physicians led him to explore other ways to make an impact. That search sparked his discovery of epidemiology - where he then found a meaningful way to influence health at the population level.

Dr. Pry was drawn into choosing UC Davis by the relationships and opportunities that make the campus and community unique. In his classrooms, he is committed to helping students develop a deep appreciation for asking strong public health questions and building the skills to design studies, collect and analyze data, and interpret results with confidence and clarity.

His advice for students currently pursuing a path in public health is: “Public health needs bright and motivated professionals now more than ever however, I fear, it has never been a more difficult path.”

A fun fact students may be surprised to learn is that he has spent most of the past decade living in Lusaka, Zambia, where he continues his work and research!

Outside of his career, he stays active with rock climbing, soccer, squash, padel, and ultimate frisbee. One of his favorite quotes is: “No truly great person ever thought themselves so.”

We’re so grateful to have Professor Pry as part of the UC Davis Public Health Sciences community!
