UC Landscape Plant Irrigation Trials Photos and trial results featuring low water-use, disease-resistant, pest-tolerant plants

We perform 2-year irrigation trials on perennial landscape plants in order to evaluate their performance on reduced levels of irrigation. We plant in the fall and establish them for at least a full year on regular irrigation. The second spring we begin deficit irrigation at three levels based on percentages of what a turf grass uses, or what is called reference evapotranspiration (ETo). At the end

of the summer we have a good idea of their fitness on low water levels and the lowest level that produces acceptable garden performance.
