Professors Mark Agerton and Kristin Kiesel attended a field trip to HMC farms as part of a partnership where farming practices meet research that is happening at UC Davis.

Agerton said he was, “struck by the sophistication and scope of the operations, and the innovation” going on at HMC farms. Kiesel said, “It is always great to be able to talk with industry leaders and gain new insights for my research and teaching. It reminded me how important the research we do is and how farmers and processors rely on our findings. Also, it reminded me how fascinating agricultural production is, and how many challenges they face. I left with a deep appreciation for the leaders in this industry.”

“Water is a huge deal, and there are some big distortions in that market: it’s difficult to trade (the water market is not actually very liquid...) and there are few property rights for groundwater, which leads to overextraction,” said Professor Agerton.

Professor Kiesel said she felt her, “research was very much aligned and I mostly used this opportunity to ask important questions that can improve my research, such as determinants of organic planting and production decisions and branding in the produce industry. It was also great to connect with other UC Davis researchers.”

Professor Aaron Smith is quoted in an Inside Climate News article:

When tallying the carbon effects of burning petroleum fuel, researchers can simply look at the drilling, the refining and the burning of a gallon of fuel. But in agriculture, there are dozens of additional variables.

"On the agriculture side, you have to ask: Is it coming from a brand new field? How are you fertilizing? How are you generating the ethanol, and many other things," said Aaron Smith, a professor of agriculture and resource economics at the University of California, Davis. "The bottom line is you end up having a lot of modeling choices, which means if you want to find a favorable or unfavorable finding you can."

At a crucial moment in ethanol policy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is doubling down on its argument that ethanol is better than conventional fuel.

Father's Day is this Sunday, June 16th. Here are some thoughts from Chancellor Gary May on graduation, fathers and life. Happy early Father's Day to all the fathers out there.

We’ve entered the peak season for dispensing wisdom as graduation ceremonies uplift UC Davis and schools all over the region. Commencement speakers (including myself) are ready to encourage the crowds in caps and gowns to think boldly, serve the greater good and be a role model for others. With al...
