“What makes me proud to be an Aggie? Other Aggies. I’ve met some of the most amazing, caring and kind people here. Even though you have to say goodbye to people after graduation, you’ll always appreciate them and the experiences you went through together. Laughs, stress, trips, tears. My time at UC Davis has been the most formative of my life— I can’t even imagine what my life would even be like if I didn’t end up here. I’m going to miss it when I’m gone, but I know I’ll always be an Aggie.”

Many, many thanks are due to Sal Cruz for his management of the Aggie Pride Friday program on Facebook and Instagram over the past two years. He channeled his pride into creating captivating stories and images celebrating our special university community and campus. Along with engagement from students and the campus community, the stories engaged alumni and friends of the university in celebrating what’s unique about being an Aggie. We’ll miss Sal when he graduates in December!

For now, we’re taking a pause to re-imagine the Aggie Pride Friday program with students and university partners. Check back after the first of the year to find out more. Go Aggies!

"I think the Silo is a perfect symbol for the university. How cool is it that an old dairy barn was repurposed for eating and study space? I can't think of any other school that would have something like this."

"The renovation and new restaurants are pretty good, but I'm still a little upset about the time I wanted to use my free Starbucks drink reward but found out it had switched."

"It's like a little mall. You can get your bike fixed at the ASUCD Bike Barn, get something to eat at the food trucks and shop at ASUCD Aggie Reuse Store all in the same afternoon!"

"My defining moment would have to be getting rejected after my final interview at Accenture. It was the end of Winter Quarter of my senior year and I thought I finally had my life figured out. It was my dream job, and I had already overcome what I had assumed was the toughest hurdle: getting the interview with a mediocre GPA and not much experience. It turns out the real hurdle was the final interview, and I sucked. After not getting my dream job, I went into a downward spiral. Seeing my friends’ support helped me get back on the right track and eventually land a consulting job in Davis, which let me stay near my friends. In some ways, the rejection was a blessing in disguise.

Why am I proud to be an Aggie? How accepting everyone has been no matter where I go. I remember during freshman orientation I awkwardly went up to some random guy at the DC to strike up a conversation and he was super welcoming. The same goes for just about any group on campus—business clubs, fraternities, football teams, random people at Blondie’s, you name it. There’s a bond among just about everyone here."

"The CoHo is one of the iconic Davis experiences. A coffee house that is filled will people of all majors and backgrounds getting food for lunch or studying hard for their upcoming midterm."

"Coming to work at the CoHo is always a positive experience. You get close with those you work with and form relationships with so many different people."

“It’s pretty dope that you can just run into your friends and classmates at any given time at the CoHo, but it isn’t always convenient— the other day I ran into three different exes within the span of 5 minutes. I was simultaneously proud of and disappointed in myself. I graduated last Spring…”

Happy 50th anniversary, ASUCD Coffee House!

“I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Davis. I like to say I’m one of the rare ones around. My dad went to school here when it was a two-year school, right after the war. Both my parents worked on campus— my mom worked for four chancellors over twenty-six years and my dad worked with Plant Pathology for thirty-five years. I started at UC Davis in 1972 right out of college and I have been here since. I'm in my forty-sixth year heading into my forty-seventh in July.

My parents definitely showed me how much pride they had in U.C. Davis and taught me to always try to give back as much as possible to sustain the mission of our campus. To ensure that our faculty have the greatest tools, technology and everything they need to serve our students in the best way possible. Students give so much to us. We are enriched by bringing students here and participating and engaging with them. They keep me going, they keep me alive, and they keep my spirit really high.

Why am I proud to be an Aggie? The compassion and true care that our staff and faculty have for our students and their desire to walk the educational journey with them to ensure that they achieve their goals. They do it with a smile and they do it with such care.”

What advice do you have for students, both new and continuing?

“I tell them to engage, to experience, to take the opportunities that are given to them not only in the classroom. There's so much as far as clubs and sports, music, working with other students, giving back, medical clinic volunteering, research opportunities, internships. Over 70% of our students are supported by some kind of financial aid so we can definitely make things happen— they can go on to study abroad or special research programs. Don't just sit in the classroom. Talk to the person next to you— they bring a wealth of experience and perspectives that is enriching not only in the classroom but in the campus community as a whole.”

Congratulations to Jesse Erdmann, our second winner for our Spring into Aggie Pride giveaway!

"UC Davis is truly a great university. They're one of the top public universities for STEM, and I felt that as a future scientist it would be very helpful for me to attend such a prestigious school.

Why am I proud to be an Aggie? The amazing diversity that Davis has. The campus is filled with people from different backgrounds, both socioeconomically and culturally. I think having that creates a community where everyone can be accepted and feel like they’re an integral part of it. It feels like more than just a university— it’s a family."

— Jesse Erdmann, Third Year Chemistry Major

Everyone have a fun and safe Picnic Day, and look out for our upcoming giveaway for mother's day!
