All join hands and join us on Monday, Nov. 2 for the Fall 2026 Campus Square Dance, called by guest Evie Ladin, and accompanied by the UC Davis Bluegrass and Old Time String Band, directed by Professor Scott Linford. Beginners are welcome. Please wear something comfortable to dance in and shoes in which you can pivot in. 5 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Free and open to all.

This week's Shinkoskey Noon Concert features San Francisco's Del Sol Quartet (Benjamin Kreith and Hyeyung Sol Yoon, violins; Charlton Lee, viola and Kathryn Bates, cello) performing Edward Simon's "Guardian of the Oceans" and Julius Eastman's "Gay Guerilla." The Quartet believes that music can, and should, happen anywhere - from a Mission District sidewalk or a rural high school, off the canyon walls of the Yampa River or the hallowed walls of Library of Congress. Del Sol’s performances provide the possibility for unexpected discovery, sparking dialogue and bringing people together. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 12:05 p.m. in the Ann E. Pitzer Center. The Empyrean Ensemble presents engaging and eclectic programs, inviting audiences to experience new musical sensations delivered with high artistry by its extraordinary players. Join the ensemble on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. for a free concert at the Ann E. Pitzer Center. Resident conductor Matilda Hofman leads the ensemble in a program that includes Mario Lavista's "Marsias" for Oboe and Crystal Goblets, Eun Young Lee's "tra di noi," John Cage's "Six Melodies," Maija Hynninen's "Mask the Absence," and the world premiere of Jenny Xiong's "江雪 (River/Snow)."

On Friday, Oct. 23, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students from the Department of Music participate in a living sound installation, the "Arboretum Sound Lab," as part of the National Gathering of Imagining America, titled "Tides of Transition: Restoring Collective Spirit in Troubled Times." It will begin at 10:45 a.m. in the Arboretum section close to the Wyatt Deck and on the South side of Putah Creek, towards the Gorman Museum of Native American Art. This co-creative project will transform the Arboretum into an experimental ecosystem based on the interplay between human and more-than-human participants — musicians, plants, birds, wind, water, and other elements of the landscape. The project is conceived by music philosopher and composer Karlton Hester (Professor of Music at UC Santa Cruz) in collaboration with Pierpaolo Polzonetti (Professor of Music at UC Davis). Free and open to all.

This week's Shinkoskey Noon Concert presents The Mighty Wallops featuring Bobby Waller, voice, guitar and songwriter; Matt Albright, trombone; Portia Njoku, tuba; and Peter Halldorf, drums. The ensemble came together in 2024 over a shared love for early jazz and blues. After woodshedding the songs of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and Lead Belly, they started reinventing contemporary pop hits in 1920s style (a la Postmodern Jukebox) and composing their own quirky originals. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 12:05pm in the Ann E. Pitzer Center. Free and open to all.

Congratulations to Professor Juan Diego Díaz! His 𝑬𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒍: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑩𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑨𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝑾𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂 has been published by the Oxford University Press.

This is the first study to examine four communities — the Tabom in Ghana, the Brésiliens in Togo, the Agudas in Benin, and the Amaros in Nigeria — in tandem to underscore their transnational connections within West Africa, Brazil, and the Black Atlantic.

Díaz is Associate Professor of Music and the Director of the UC Davis Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, as well as Director of Capoeira Ensemble.

This week's Shinkoskey Noon Concert features Artu Duo, pianist Garret Ross and cellist Ruth Marshall, a classical music duo, who has toured extensively, playing concerts in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oregon, Montana, Washington, New York, California, Minnesota, and Louisiana. They gave their debut at Carnegie Hall, playing a complete program in the Weill Recital Hall. Their program includes Claude Debussy's Cello Sonata, L. 135, Gabriel Fauré's Cello Sonata No. 1, op. 109 and Astor Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango." Thursday, Oct. 6 at 12:05 p.m. in the Ann E. Pitzer Center. Free and open to all.

The Gorman Museum of Native American Art at UC Davis presents "Gifts from the Heart: New Acquisitions at the Gorman" which opens on Sept. 23. Showcasing new gifts from private collections across the country, the exhibition features a selection of artworks by more than 40 artists in a range of media including sculpture, painting, prints, mixed media, ceramics, basketry and carving. Runs through March 14, 2027.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, the Department of Music kicks off the 2026-2027 academic year celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Ann E. Pitzer Center. The day's Shinkoskey Noon Concert features Chris Froh, percussionist, and Natsuki Fukasawa, pianist, performing alongside their students, including pianist Angelina Melis, a double major in music and human development. The program includes Japanese Traditionals: "Sakura" and "Oedo Nihonbashi" with Sarah Siu. Graduate student composer Guang Yang's "Wooden Skeleton’s Whimsical" (a premiere) featuring Megan Shieh (B.A., music ’08), and Eric Whitacre’s "Sleep" (arranged). Natsuki Fukasawa will perform Johannes Brahms’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B Major, accompanied by Igor Veligan, violin; and Mike Dahlberg, cello. Join us at the Pitzer Center at 12:05 p.m. for this musical celebration. Free and open to all.
