11/24/2025
I knew this day would eventually come. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of the Omega/Oxford Graduate School founder and Chancellor Emeritus, Dr. Hollis L. Green. This is undoubtedly a turning point and a monumental milestone in the history of OGS.
It would be an understatement to say that Dr. Green was a force to be reckoned with, with the courage and audacity to found something as innovative and world-changing as Omega/Oxford Graduate School. There is much more to be said, and much more will be said in time, but I wanted to notify the OGS community of this sad news.
Dr. Green passed away peacefully in his home with his wife, Gail, yesterday. Last weekend, Drs. McClane, Ward, and I had the opportunity to go up the mountain to visit and pray with him. He recognized each of us by name, and we each got to hold his hand for extended periods and pray with him. Bryan Phillips, son of the late Joanne Phillips, spent several days helping Gail toward the end, and, of course, Dr. Green's son, Bart, was there to help as well. They are heroes, and Gail is a true Proverbs 31 champion of a wife and partner.
"Folding Up My Tent"
Dr. Green attended our Degree Day celebration in September, his last, and asked to address the crowd. It was remarkable because he was still in reasonably good health, but he said he knew, as Peter did, that it was time for him to "fold up his tent" (2 Peter 1:14). He then transferred his Chancellor's robe to Dr. David Anderson. It was moving and a historic moment:
"Like Peter, I know it's time for me to fold up my tent." -- Dr. Hollis Green, September 27, 2025
Reviving the Oxford Widow Watch
I will be asking alumni to step up and give to the "Oxford Widow Watch" to ensure we can continue paying his widow, Gail, the small monthly pension we paid Dr. Green. Dr. Green established the "Widow Watch" in the earliest years of OGS and has always had a heart for widows. His father died when he was young, and his mother raised him. If I can find 15 other OGS alumni to donate to the Widow Watch, we can ensure we can continue funding Gail's pension. More about that later.
Future Memorial and Final Rest
As of now, Gail plans to schedule a memorial service for Dr. Green in the spring at the old campus chapel. Dr. Green will be cremated. I spoke with Dr. Green a month or so ago, and he said he built four tiny wooden coffins and wanted his ashes distributed to four places: a) the OGS campus in TN, b) England, c) Trinidad, and d) Africa. I know Dr. Green has already heard. "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Personal Reflection
Personally, I am grateful for the time I had with Dr. Green over the past six years of my presidency, as I sought to Heal Old Wounds, Restore the Foundations, and Adapt for the Future. With the board, we ensured Dr. Green was treated with dignity and respect in his final years. My last words to him were, "I promise to protect your legacy." I have no regrets.
May you have a blessed Thanksgiving with your families. Please keep Gail, Brian, Bart, and all of Dr. Green's kin in your prayers this holiday.
Sincerely,
