Flyer Innovations

Flyer Innovations Flyer Innovations believes that students can find success developing ideas in a group environment. Contact us by email: [email protected]

By recruiting diverse, forward thinking, and creative members, students have an opportunity to gain real experience while transforming ideas into reality Flyer Innovations is a fairly new (started September 2011) to campus, but is already growing with 25 members from 3 university schools (Engineering, Business, & Communication). We aim to empower and inspire students to develop professionally by a

pplying what they are learning in the classroom on real world problems and competitions. We encourage creativity and innovation by constantly helping our members come up with new ideas and then giving them the resources to develop these ideas in real products. We are structured like a business in that we are governed by a board of directors which manage the administrative side of the club as well as working to develop resources for the members to be successful. The members are organized into project teams as they choose, finding projects that they are passionate about. These teams are interdisciplinary and focus on creating environment that is driven by results, collaboration, and innovation, similar to how work is done in industry. The project teams define goals and deliverables which the board helps them achieve, but ultimately they are responsible for.

Flyer Innovations is having their final general meeting this Sunday. They are going on a nature walk to find some stimulus! Fun fact of the day, that is how the idea of Velcro came about:

"The invention of Velcro happened when George de Mestral came home following a hunting trip with his dog. This hunting trip was in the beautiful Alps. When he came home, he realized there was something stuck to his clothes. This was also visible on the fur of his dog. His natural curiosity for things led to the examination of these objects under the microscope. The objects in this case were the seeds of burdock. With the help of the microscope he realized it had tiny 'hooks'. This is what made it 'stick' to things in a jiffy. This itself gave rise to the thought of how the substance can be used to bind two surfaces together. This was what made him curious to know ways to implement the usage of his current discovery."

A minuscule object but a great help in our everyday lives, Velcro is used in many ways to fasten two surfaces. Have you ever wondered who invented Velcro? Well, read on to know about the invention and history of Velcro.
