To the Entire B-CU Community,

The Music Department at Bethune-Cookman University is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Kedrick Redding to the position of Professor of Practice in Music Education beginning August 2024.

Mr. Redding is a native of the Orlando area and an alumnus of B-CU. While at B-CU, he participated in the Marching Wildcats, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band, serving as section leader for those ensembles. He earned the Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Bethune-Cookman University, the Master's Degree in Music with a Concentration in Conducting from the University of Central Florida, and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Houston majoring in Music Education with a minor in Conducting.

Immediately after college, Mr. Redding returned home to open the newly built Sand Lake Elementary. He was the first Music teacher there and wrote the school song still being used today. In 2007, Mr. Redding became the Band Director at Carver Middle School. Starting with seven advanced students, Mr. Redding built a program that would become the talk of the town with an average of 120 students yearly. During his 8-year tenure, the band program received several superior and excellent ratings during performance assessment and solo & ensemble. Mr. Redding was also nominated twice for teacher of the year at Carver MS, and was the recipient of the $30,000 Holland Opus Grant that funded several instruments. Simultaneously, Mr. Redding served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Jones High School from 2006-2014. The Jones High School Marching Tigers were known around the world and were a fan favorite!

Mr. Redding relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2014 to take a position as Charles Drew High School's director of bands in Riverdale, Georgia. As the director at Charles Drew, Mr. Redding started the jazz band ensemble, brass, woodwind, and percussion chamber ensembles in addition to continuing the superior-rated symphonic band's success. The Marching Titans, under his leadership, won numerous awards in the Marching Band Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2015, Mr. Redding became the Director of Bands at Edward Waters College. During his tenure at Edward Waters College, Mr. Redding expanded the band membership, as well as expanding the instrumental music curriculum by starting the jazz band, brass, woodwind, and percussion chamber ensembles. Mr. Redding also created courses to support the overall development of musicians and educators such as Marching & Concert Band Techniques, Band Literature, and Instrumental Methods.

In 2020, Mr. Redding became the Assistant Band Director of the marching band at Texas Southern University, and is also the Director of the Wind Ensemble, Instrumental Coordinator, and Chapter Advisor for Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Inc., and Tau Beta Sigma Honorary Band Sorority, Inc. His teaching duties at TSU include Conducting, Music Technology, Brass Methods, Fine Arts and Daily Living, Music Theory I & II, Ear Training I & II, and Applied Trombone. Mr. Redding also serves as the TBME (Texas Black Music Educators) collegiate coordinator, as well as the Houston chapter coordinator for TBME. Mr. Redding is a member of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Fraternity of America, Inc., Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Mr. Redding believes through education, time, and commitment, great leaders are born. A resilient leader possesses strong principles, courage, and dedication to a clear vision while guiding young minds toward greatness.
