I've decided that if you give a kindergartener enough tape, they believe they can fix absolutely anything.

A broken pencil? Tape it.

A torn piece of paper? Tape it.

A shoe that's coming apart? Tape it.

A crayon that snapped in half? Apparently, if you wrap enough tape around it, you've got yourself a brand-new crayon. 😂

I've been teaching early childhood for 20 years, and I don't think I've ever met a five-year-old who looked at a roll of tape and thought, "I should probably use this sparingly."

They pull off a piece that's about three feet long, get it stuck to their fingers, wrap it around their own hand twice, and somehow manage to attach it to the table before they ever get near the thing they were trying to fix.

Then they need another piece.

One of my favorite things is watching a kindergartener attempt to repair something that's already beyond saving. They'll bring me a broken object held together with so much tape that I can't even tell what it used to be.

"Mr. Stark, I fixed it!"

Well, buddy, I can see that you've done SOMETHING to it. 😂

The confidence is what gets me. They don't need instructions. They don't need a demonstration. They certainly don't need an adult suggesting that maybe this particular problem isn't going to be solved with Scotch tape.

They have a plan, and that plan involves using the entire roll.

Of course, kindergarten tape has other uses, too. I've seen children tape two perfectly good pieces of paper together for no apparent reason, tape things to their desks that didn't need to be attached, and use enough tape on one little project to make it practically waterproof.

Meanwhile, I'm over here trying to make one roll last until Christmas.

I will say this about kindergarteners, though. When something breaks, their first instinct is usually to try to fix it. They might not have the engineering skills just yet, but they've certainly got the determination.

I'm just hoping nobody discovers the packing tape.
