On September 11, 2001, about 140 infants and toddlers were inside the Pentagon’s Child Development Center, close enough to the building that the morning still reached them.
Hanna Born was three. She was playing with dance ribbons when American Airlines Flight 77 struck. She remembers the ribbons. Then a hallway. Nothing in between.
Her sister Heather was four months old—too young to keep any of it.
Volunteers and service members carried every child out. Not one was harmed. Their mother was miles away at Bolling and learned only after it was over. A few days later Hanna’s father brought her back, not to scare her, but so she could see people still digging, still helping, still showing up.
The daycare closed for good in 2004. The luck of that morning did not. Her parents said it again and again: their family walked out; so many families did not.
In 2019 she graduated from the Air Force Academy. She is a captain now, an instructor pilot in the TH-1H Huey with the 23rd Flying Training Squadron, teaching the next class of Army helicopter pilots.
Outside the cockpit she chose a longer watch.
On September 11, 2025, she started running. The distance is 2,977 miles—one for every person who died that day. She averages a little more than eight miles a day. With each mile she says a name. A person. A story.
She heard a line she could not put down: people die twice. Once when they stop breathing. Again the last time someone speaks their name.
Her work is to keep that second day from arriving.
She is due to finish on September 11, 2026—twenty-five years after she was carried out of a hallway she barely remembers.
2,977 miles. 2,977 names. A child who was too small to understand what had happened, grown into someone determined that no one else will have to forget.
