Excitement is building as the date draws near for the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in nearly 100 years. The eclipse will cross from Oregon to South Carolina on Monday, August 21, 2017. In Michigan, we’ll only see a partial solar eclipse. Here’s a video illustrating what the eclipse will...

Astronomy in Pop Culture!

Wonder Woman's story is loosely base off Greek mythology of the constellation Orion. In Roman mythology, Diana is the same as Greek goddess of the hunt Artemis, who is the goddess in the constellation story. Orion was a great human hunter who challenged the gods/angered Apollo (not Ares), and eventually Artemis was tricked by Apollo into shooting him with an arrow while he swam in the sea. In discovering she had killed him, she had her friend/lover put in the stars along with his two faithful hunting dogs, Canus major and minor, to honor him. This would be Steve and his faithful friends.

I just thought I would pass this along. I know it's been a long time since I've posted or been in contact with anyone but my job keeps me super busy. I just wanted to share this email incase anyone's interested

Hello, Stargazers!

Ready to visit beautiful downtown Traverse City, Michigan this fall? We’re planning a harvest of a different sort. Please join us as we gather the Midwest community of astronomy and space enthusiasts for a celebration beneath the amazing skies of northern Michigan. We’re calling this two-day event the MIDWEST Space Fest, and it takes place Friday evening, Oct. 4 and all day Saturday, Oct. 5.

As the space festival’s founding organization, Magnetic North Nonprofit is excited to invite you and your members to help us make this space and astronomy festival the most memorable experience of its kind, especially for students. Your participation in our free solar viewing and stargazing events (with amateur astronomers and storytellers) over West Grand Traverse Bay would be a welcome addition to the festival. For details about how your club can get involved, click here.

The festival’s keynote speaker is Dr. Alex Filippenko, of the University of California-Berkeley, and tickets to his presentation and two other special events – including a showing of the EMMY-nominated science documentary “The City Dark” and a celebratory Launch Party – may be purchased online now at www.magnorth.org.

Please visit our website www.magnorth.org for details about all of the festival’s activities, including our free exhibits. You’ll also find details about our Student Ambassador scholarship program, a Silent Auction for a Celestron telescope, a storefront window competition, and more.

We’re looking forward to seeing you at the first-ever MIDWEST Space Festival for a fresh, fun and fascinating look at our Universe.

Fingers crossed for clear skies!

Carolyn

The fall semester is quickly approaching. So if you would like to take on a leadership position or any other position for that matter let us know. The same is true if you are interested in joining the club. We actually have a group formed on Facebook that we happen to use more for club related posts than this page so don't let the lack of posts on here fool you into thinking that the club only posts every once in a great while.

Now that we are done with Chicago, I think we are going to wind down for the year, but next semester we're going to look into the MSU Cyclotron, the Wayne State planetarium, and Eastern Michigan planetarium and observatory!
