Today, Ingram State Technical College was honored to host members of the Alabama Department of Corrections Classification Division for a collaborative meeting focused on student enrollment, retention, and success.

President David Walters welcomed the group and shared his appreciation for the vital role Classification professionals play in helping connect eligible individuals to educational opportunities. While their responsibilities often happen behind the scenes, their efforts are critical to maintaining records, processing applications, and supporting the screening process that allows students to enroll and succeed.

Strong partnerships are the foundation of ISTC’s mission. The collaboration between Ingram State and the Classification Division helps create pathways to education, employment, and successful reentry. We are grateful for their dedication and continued partnership.

⚡ Hands-On Training. Real-World Skills. Career-Ready Students. ⚡

Students in the HVAC program at Main Campus are gaining valuable experience using a new Electrical Trainer designed to take learning from basic electrical circuits to advanced HVAC troubleshooting.

The trainer allows students to work through a wide range of electrical scenarios, including heat pump systems, defrost boards, contactors, pressure switches, and indoor and outdoor fan circuits. With separate training panels, students can safely practice diagnosing and solving the types of problems they will encounter in the field.

This state-of-the-art training equipment was secured through Perkins Grant funding by Dr. Hales and is being distributed to HVAC programs throughout Ingram State Technical College, ensuring students across the college have access to industry-relevant, hands-on instruction.

At ISTC, we remain committed to providing workforce training that prepares students for successful careers in high-demand industries.

🏛️ Building Alabama's Future—One Piece at a Time

Students in ISTC's Cabinetmaking and Carpentry programs are leaving their mark on Alabama history by constructing custom dais, desks and podiums for the new Alabama State House.

The project includes five handcrafted dias ranging from 30 to 60 feet wide that will be used by lawmakers and visitors for generations to come. Students are currently at the halfway point of the project, applying advanced skills in carpentry, cabinetmaking, project management and quality craftsmanship.

This isn't the first time ISTC students have contributed to the State House. Furnishings built by ISTC students during the 2014 renovation will be transferred into the new building alongside pieces being crafted today—creating a legacy that spans generations of student craftsmen.

At ISTC, education goes beyond the classroom. Every project provides real-world experience, workforce training and an opportunity to contribute something meaningful to communities across Alabama.

Building strong partnerships today to create a stronger workforce tomorrow.

ISTC President David Walters and Facilities & Transportation Director Jay Thompson recently toured the James Hardie manufacturing facility in Prattville, joined by Central Alabama Community College President Jeff Lynn, City of Prattville, Alabama Government Economic Development Director and ISTC Institutional Advisory Board member Amy Hilliard.

James Hardie, a leading manufacturer of fiber cement siding and exterior building products, employs hundreds of skilled workers and plays an important role in the region’s economy. The company is also second-chance friendly, providing employment opportunities for qualified individuals seeking a fresh start and a pathway to long-term career success.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss workforce needs, industry partnerships, and how ISTC can continue preparing students with the skills and credentials employers need. By connecting education with employment opportunities, partnerships like these help strengthen Alabama’s workforce, support economic growth, and create brighter futures for individuals, families, and communities across the state.

This week, J.F. Ingram State Technical College joined the Alabama Department of Corrections May Wardens Meeting to provide college updates and discuss the continued impact of correctional education across the state.

President David Walters opened the presentation by sharing his vision for the college, emphasizing workforce skills training, industry-recognized credentials, and preparing individuals for successful employment as they approach release.
