Today, we gather to honor and remember Dr. Marilyn C. Beck as her memorial service is held. Dr. Beck served as Calhoun's first permanent woman president, and her impact on this college and the students she championed will never be forgotten. Her warmth, grace, and fierce dedication touched more lives than she may have ever known.

Calhoun Community College celebrates Wesley Rakestraw, Vice President of Academic Affairs, as he retires effective July 1, 2026, after three and a half years of dedicated service to our students, faculty, and staff.

Wes joined Calhoun in December 2022, bringing with him more than thirty years of experience in higher education. At Calhoun, Wes has been a tireless champion for academic excellence and student success, helping position the college for an exciting future at the heart of one of the nation's most important regions for manufacturing, aerospace, and defense. As he shared with the Calhoun family, "Calhoun is about to do amazing things as a college," and his leadership over these years has helped make that possible.

In retirement, Wes looks forward to being a full-time pawpaw, supporting his parents, and traveling with his wife, Donnette, as they celebrate 33 years of marriage. We wish him every happiness in this well-earned new season of life.

This spring, we celebrated more than just graduation - we also celebrated record-breaking momentum across the college! 🎓🌟 As we give one last shout-out to our graduates, we’d like to share some amazing numbers:

✔️ 700 students participated in commencement at the Von Braun Center, the largest number of graduates in our history to ever walk across the stage

✔️ Approximately 9,000 family members and friends joined us to celebrate this unforgettable milestone, nearly filling the VBC arena to capacity

✔️ Calhoun Community College reached its highest spring enrollment in ten years with 9,620 students.

✔️ A total of 2,716 students graduated from Calhoun over the past year.

We are grateful to Alabama’s Mountains, Rivers and Valleys (AMRV RC&D) for awarding a $60,000 grant in support of the College’s Coast Guard Auxiliary detachment! 🧭

The grant will fund the purchase of a replacement vehicle used to tow Warhawk II, the vessel used for patrol operations, emergency response, search and rescue efforts, and training opportunities throughout the region. 🛥️

Thank you to the community and to the state leaders who continue to invest these public safety and educational partnerships across North Alabama!
