When James Millikin founded the university more than 110 years ago, he did so based upon the idea of combining theory and practice. While this was a radical idea at the time, today, we know that practice is not enough. Today's students must perform their knowledge in order to be truly prepared for life after college. Market research. You name it; our students are finding new ways to live out their

learning and reap the rewards of their hard work. The result – Millikin students graduate with experience and the confidence to succeed. In 2015, 99% of our students went on to find jobs or pursued a graduate degree within six months of graduation. This spring, Dr. James Rauff, Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, retired after nearly four decades with Millikin. Rauff's career is defined by interdisciplinary scholarship, student mentorship, and a deep belief in the power of kindness, gratitude, and presence.

He also served as our Spring 2026 Commencement keynote speaker. His address, titled “Everywhere and Forever,” drew from one of his longtime intellectual fascinations: infinity. ♾️

Congratulations, Dr. Rauff! You will be greatly missed here at the Big Blue.
