ASD Affinity Program, Defiance College

ASD Affinity Program, Defiance College Defiance College’s ASD Affinity program supports college students with ASD in reaching their full potential.

As the number of children diagnosed with ASD increases, the need is greater than ever to provide for avenues of success into adulthood. Higher education can be an appropriate step for many college age students with ASD who are academically able to succeed but may require support to navigate the traditional college residential campus. Defiance College’s ASD Affinity program provides structured supp

orts to college students with ASD so that they might reach their full potential. Our services seek to foster independence by facilitating a residential campus experience with a support network in place to maximize opportunities for success and readiness to enter the workforce upon graduation. Students accepted into the program will receive campus housing in suite-style living with private bedrooms, one-to-one services with peer tutors trained specifically on autism intervention, and peer mentoring with instruction on social and independent living skills. Students will also meet with the Program Coordinator weekly for non-credit bearing coursework on Adult Decision Making skills, as well as for regular check-ins to review their progress in the program and overall campus experience. Students interested in applying to the ASD Affinity Program should go to http://www.defiance.edu/autism/affinity/index.html on the Defiance College website to begin the application process. Additional questions regarding applications can be directed to Dr. Clarissa Barnes at [email protected] or 419.783.2355.
