The distance from NIU to Custom Aluminum Products in Genoa is just 16 miles. The journey from learning about workplace safety in a classroom to experiencing it firsthand is much greater.

This spring, students in NIU's Environmental, Health and Safety program stepped into a manufacturing environment to conduct safety assessments, observe operations and see how safety principles are applied every day.

The semester-long partnership with Custom Aluminum Products gave students valuable hands-on experience while helping bridge the gap between theory and practice.

“Experiential learning opportunities like this prepare our students to lead from day one in their careers," says CEET Dean Dave Grewell.

Read how this industry partnership is helping prepare the next generation of safety professionals.

Through a symbiotic partnership, Custom Aluminum Products in Genoa opens door to experiential learning for CEET engineering students.

A project that began over a decade ago at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has earned some of the highest recognition in science--and it's got Huskie fingerprints on it!

Mechanical Engineering Professor Nick Pohlman and CEET alumni Greg Luo and Andrew Behnke are among the contributors recognized with the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for their work on the Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab.

Their contributions mean a $7,500 share each of the $3 million prize that's being divvied up by the 400 contributors. It also highlights the power of hands-on research experiences and the opportunities available to CEET students through partnerships with world-class laboratories.

Congratulations to Nick, Greg, Andrew and the entire collaboration!

Today, CEET administrative leaders, department chairs and other staff members came together for our annual Senate Plus retreat.

The day was filled with thoughtful conversations about how we can continue improving the experience for our students, from the classroom to co-curricular opportunities and beyond.

We also took a break for a little friendly competition with a quiz on CEET faculty, staff and history. Congratulations to our top finishers for demonstrating their Huskie engineering knowledge.

Thanks to everyone whose input helped make the day productive.
