Building bridges was more than an engineering lesson this summer.

As part of a broader NIU-wide initiative, CEET faculty, staff and students partnered with Altus Academy on Chicago's West Side to introduce young learners to engineering, robotics, entrepreneurship and college life.

Through hands-on activities and a visit to campus, including the Engineering Building, students explored new possibilities for their futures while connecting with mentors dedicated to helping them succeed.

Read how the partnership is inspiring the next generation of innovators:

Building bridges was a recurring theme this summer in our emerging collaboration with a school on Chicago’s West Side. That connectivity came to life both

🎤 Share your industry insight.

Help wanted: NIU engineering alumni to volunteer as mock recruiters at this Speed Interviews event that's open to all engineering students.

Guide students as they practice their elevator pitches, discuss projects and gain confidence before the CEET Job & Internship Fair. Volunteers will represent a mock company table and provide quick feedback to students as they rotate.

📅 Thursday, Sept. 17 ⏰ 5 p.m. 📍 NIU Engineering Building

A decade ago, Lichuan Liu was a worried parent searching for answers as her infant son struggled with an illness he was too young to describe.

That experience, featured this past Friday in the Daily Chronicle - Shaw Local, inspired a research journey that could help transform pediatric healthcare.

Now, the NIU engineering professor is developing an AI-assisted stethoscope that can analyze respiratory sounds and help identify conditions such as pneumonia, asthma and croup. Her goal is simple but powerful: give healthcare providers and families better information, faster.

Innovation often starts with a personal challenge. Thanks to Dr. Liu's work, parents facing those same anxious moments may one day have access to tools that help children receive care sooner.

There were plenty of laughs, a little fundraising and more than a few splashes at the CEET Cookout yesterday!

Mission (NIU's beloved mascot husky), engineering students, faculty, staff and friends of the college gathered to celebrate another exciting year ahead.

The second annual Splash Down! challenge raised close to $100 for student groups and, in addition to Dean Dave Grewell and other CEET personnel, saw numerous students "get on the wet seat."

Thanks to all who made it such a memorable event on the east lawn of the Engineering Building.

On Sunday, the BELONG in STEM Scholars Program held a kickoff event for the school year welcoming about 30 new students and seven returning students into this remarkable initiative.

The program provides scholarships, mentorship, professional development opportunities, research experiences and peer support for academically talented students with financial need. Since its launch, dozens of students have benefited from the program, earning degrees, pursuing graduate education and building successful careers in STEM fields.

One of the program's co-principal investigators is Christine Nguyen, chair of NIU's Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

She and CEET Dean Dave Grewell were on hand to support this important initiative and celebrate the students whose lives are being transformed through the program.

The NSF-supported BELONG in STEM program continues to expand opportunities for promising STEM students through scholarships, community-building, mentorship and career development.

Today we wrap up our third annual Engineering Accelerator! 🎉

This three-day program helps propel incoming engineering students over the next four years...as they build confidence, strengthen key academic skills and begin forming the connections that will support their NIU journey.

An initiative of Dean Dave Grewell, the Accelerator helps students transition to college-level engineering by reinforcing math fundamentals, introducing campus resources and creating a strong sense of community before classes begin.

Thanks to other CEET personnel who have provided support, including Associate Professor Kevin Martin, Visiting Professor Peter Lin and instructor Justin Cathey for investing their time, expertise and encouragement in our newest Huskie engineers.

And congratulations to all of the students who participated--we look forward to seeing you all blossom here at CEET.
