Congratulations to Stetson University History major and duPont-Ball Library Archives intern Benjamin Miyazato for winning the 2026 Society of Florida Archivists Adam Hunt Memorial Internship Stipend Award, as well as the Judith Beale Scholarship which allowed him to attend this year's SFA Annual Conference in St. Petersburg. Benjamin has already performed stellar work as an intern in the Archives over the 2025-2026 academic year, and with this stipend will be able to continue his important project documenting veteran's history at Stetson this summer. Way to go, Benjamin!

Happy birthday to American innovator, philanthropist, and Stetson University benefactor John B. Stetson, born on this day in 1830! From the duPont-Ball Library Archives and Special Collections, here are two birthday gifts we know he received: a desk set made of silver, ivory, mother-of-pearl, and gold presented by his wife Elizabeth and their children on his 62nd birthday in 1892, and a red, white, and blue silk quilt made by employees of the John B. Stetson Company in Philadelphia and presented to him on his 50th birthday in 1880.

Congratulations to our 2025 duPont-Ball Library Research Prize Winners!

The duPont-Ball Library is proud to recognize two outstanding first-year researchers from the Fall 2025 semester.

Kayla Lewis is the recipient of the Evans C. Johnson Research Prize for her paper "How do the themes in Mexican ex-votos reflect the moral values in Mexican society?" written for Dr. Natalia da Silva's Folk Art in the Americas FSEM. Kayla's paper traces the evolution of Mexican votive art across three centuries, using Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory as a lens to analyze how shifting cultural, political, and religious forces — from colonial-era Catholicism to post-revolutionary Mexican identity — are reflected in the themes and visual elements of ex-votos. The judges were impressed by the sophistication of her interdisciplinary approach and her skillful synthesis of art history, psychology, and cultural studies sources.

Brooke Billings is the recipient of the R. Neil Scott Research Prize for her paper "AI's Rapid Growth and Even Faster Consumption of Electricity," written for Dr. Kevin Riggs's Energy and the Environment FSEM. Brooke's paper examines the staggering and often underappreciated environmental costs of artificial intelligence — from the energy demands of data centers and GPU systems to the disproportionate climate impacts on communities in the Global South. The judges commended her timely topic, her confident command of technical and scientific literature, and her balanced consideration of both the benefits and harms of AI's rapid expansion.

Both students were recognized at an award ceremony held at the duPont-Ball Library in April 2026. The library congratulates Kayla and Brooke on their exceptional scholarship and thanks all students who submitted papers this year.
