La Casa Cultural Latina closed out the term celebrating one of our largest cohorts yet! This semester brought immersive experiences, a Stetson student assistant, new textbooks, and so much fun along the way.

Special note: None of this would be possible without the energy, drive, and passion of our incredible instructor, Leticia Policke. She continues to be the cornerstone of our ESL program!

Last weekend, La Casa Cultural Latina visited Kennedy Space Center. Our community learners brought their unit on space and the universe to life through mini-presentations on site. It was a lovely day of learning, reflection, and community.

Our second ESL excursion was a success! Our community learners traveled to St. Augustine to explore Florida history and the Spanish roots of the state. They even drank from the Fountain of Youth.

On this warm, Central Florida day, our ESL community learners stepped outside of the classroom!

Today’s excursion took us to the Marine Science Center in New Smyrna, where students participated in a morning dolphin tour, explored local ecosystems, and learned about environmental stewardship through an educational institute tour.

This marks the first of a series of immersive outings designed to strengthen English skills through real-world engagement. By connecting language to local culture and environmental awareness, our students are not only building vocabulary, they are building confidence and belonging.

Our ESL courses are in full swing this semester with a vibrant class of 25 community learners!

Leaning into Stetson’s experiential model of teaching, we have designed a series of exciting, immersive, high-impact experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom. This semester, our students will participate in:

• A Dolphin Discovery Tour at the Marine Science Center

• A trip to St. Augustine to explore Florida history (and a testament to the Spanish language being the first non-indigenous language spoken in the US, a history longer than English)

• A visit to the Kennedy Space Center

• A showing of The Sound of Music at the Athens Theatre

Each experience challenges our students to put their English skills into practice in real-world settings: asking questions, navigating new environments, engaging with their community, and building confidence along the way.

Language learning is most powerful when it moves beyond textbooks and into lived experience. We’re proud of our learners for embracing every opportunity to grow, connect, and thrive in Central Florida.

More to come!

La Casa Cultural Latina was happy to host the zines, monster manifestos, and original Halloween Horror Night–style haunted house designs created by students in Strange Tales of Latin(x) America and the Caribbean, co-taught across Religious Studies and Spanish. We were happy to share our cozy space where students could get weird, imagine otherwise, and challenge the histories that haunt us, while celebrating the end of the semester with tacos!
