Classics majors and minors study ancient Greece and Rome through direct access to the rich tradition of Greek and Latin literature in a variety of genres: epic, lyric and elegiac poetry; tragedy and comedy; ancient history and philosophy; classical mythology and religion. Classics at Ohio Wesleyan has a long tradition that dates back to the very founding of the college in 1842 and today, the progr

am is headed by Dr. Lee Fratantuono, and also includes Dr. Serena Witzke, in addition to its many majors, minors and friends of the department. In addition to its curriculum, the program is actively involved on campus, promoting events such as speakers, marathons, movie nights, receptions and tutoring.

The Classics Department is very proud of our alumna Emma Hilliard, who has co-authored the Oxford online bibliography for Seneca's Oedipus! Congratulations Emma!

Seneca’s Oedipus, like all his plays, has in the past fifty years moved from being marginalized and rejected to being studied seriously in its own right as a poetic and dramatic product. The Classics Department is happy to announce that we've opened the order form for our 2017 sweatshirts! This order is open to all students, alumni, professors, family, and friends.
The bust on the front is of Chrysippus and the quote on the back is from Juvenal's second satire. It roughly translates to "they are unlearned persons, though you may find their houses crammed with plaster casts of Chrysippus; for their greatest hero is the man who has brought a likeness of Aristotle or Pittacus, or bids his shelves preserve an original portrait of Cleanthes." (Though if you don't like the translation when someone asks what it means, you can tell them whatever you want because they likely wouldn't be able to correct you.)
If you have any concerns about how we can get it to you, just let us know! https://www.customink.com/g/eqn0-00b4-fcgy
