Piedmont University Welcomes Dr. Jessica Bond to the CMSD department!

Dr. Bond recently earned her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Georgia and brings extensive experience as a speech-language pathologist, clinical educator, and researcher. Her scholarly work focuses on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), educator training, and improving communication outcomes for children with complex communication needs.
We are excited to have Dr. Bond join our CSD faculty and look forward to the expertise, mentorship, and innovation she will bring to our students, clinic, and academic community.

To our incredible Piedmont SLP undergraduate and graduate students, CONGRATULATIONS Class of 2026! 🎓✨

What an honor it has been to watch you grow into compassionate, knowledgeable, and dedicated future professionals. From long clinic days and lesson planning to evaluations, presentations, late night studying, and countless moments of growth, you have worked incredibly hard to reach this milestone.

We are so proud of the clinicians, advocates, researchers, and leaders you are becoming. The future of communication sciences and disorders is brighter because of each of you. As you move into this next chapter, never forget the impact you will make as SLPs through the voices you help empower, the connections you help build, and the lives you will change along the way.

Thank you for the impact you’ve already made within our clinic, schools, and community partners. We cannot wait to see where this next chapter takes you.

✨It's May! Our favorite month of the year! 🤩Happy Better Hearing and Speech Month! 🗣️

What does a speech language pathologist really do? 👀

Short answer: a lot more than people think. From newborns to end of life care, we assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing disorders. Basically, we help people find their voice, communicate effectively, and improve quality of life for all💙

Yesterday, we celebrated the accomplishments of our first-year graduate SLP students and capstone students. Their work this semester reflects dedication across both academic and clinical settings.

From the classroom to clinical practice, our students have spent countless hours studying, researching, and synthesizing lecture content, then carrying that knowledge into supporting individuals across the lifespan through diagnosis and treatment as student clinicians. They have shown what it truly means to work hard and remain committed to continuously improving and strengthening their knowledge and clinical skills.

We loved recognizing their hard work through capstone awards, fun superlatives, and celebrating two students who received Certificates of Scholarship from the Scottish Rite Foundation ✨

We’re so proud of each of you and can’t wait to see what’s next!

Hands-on learning in action today with Professor Chandler Brown, CCC-SLP 🤍

Our students dove into a dynamic dysphagia lab exploring feeding and swallowing across the lifespan. From infant and pediatric considerations to adult care, they experienced how assessment and treatment go far beyond traditional “swallow trials.”

Students engaged with a variety of therapeutic tools and techniques, including z-vibe, VitalStim, thermal and tactile stimulation, KT taping, and strategies for identifying and addressing tongue, lip, and buccal ties. Even more importantly, they explored how factors like body tension, reflexes, sensory input, and positioning all play a role in swallowing.

We are especially grateful for Professor Brown’s expertise in infant feeding and swallowing. Her clinical work spans from medically fragile newborns just days old through adolescence, bringing real-world depth and perspective that our students get to experience firsthand.

This lab emphasized what has been taught this semester in dysphagia: swallowing is not just about the mouth. It is about understanding the whole person. Our students are learning to think holistically and work within an interdisciplinary mindset to support meaningful, functional outcomes for every client.

So proud of the curiosity, critical thinking, and hands-on engagement in this space 💚

Student Spotlight Sunday ✨

Second-year SLP student Caroline Lewallen is completing her externship at a pediatric clinic this semester!

Caroline has been working with pediatric populations, with a special interest in AAC and pediatric feeding and swallowing. She has focused on integrating AAC into functional, activity based sessions, supporting clients in using their systems across daily routines and encouraging independent initiation.

Through her externship, Caroline has also gained valuable experience in pediatric dysphagia, learning to address food aversions and increase oral motor awareness using gradual exposure and sensory based strategies in the clinic setting.

We are so proud of the work Caroline is doing and the impact she is making with her clients! 💚

Wrapping up a meaningful semester of community-based clinical learning 💚

Our first-year graduate SLP students have spent the semester immersed in hands-on experiences across a variety of community placements, developing clinical skills while building meaningful connections in each setting.

We are deeply grateful for our faculty supervisors, whose guidance and support make these experiences possible, and for our incredible community partners: Baldwin Elementary, Woodville Elementary, Lakeview Academy, Friends You Need Club Inc. (FUN), Bloom Enterprises of Georgia Inc., and The Phoenix at Lake Lanier.

Your collaboration, generosity, and commitment to our students create opportunities that are truly invaluable. Thank you for welcoming our students, investing in their growth, and partnering with us to support the communities we serve.

Student Spotlight Sunday ✨

Second-year SLP student Chelsea Jordan is completing her externship in an elementary school setting this semester, where she is continuing to build her clinical skills in a dynamic school-based environment.

Chelsea shared, “I am amazed at how my supervisor is able to complete all the therapy sessions while also managing meetings and documentation. I have grown in my ability to manage more subtle student behaviors in group settings, and my data collection skills have improved as well.”

Chelsea reports that she loves working with the students she serves, and she has appreciated learning from her supervisor, who has shared an impressive assortment of resources to support therapy and intervention.

Experiences like this highlight the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and real-world practice in developing confident, effective future SLPs.

🎓✨ Accepted Students Day at Piedmont CMSD! ✨🎓

We loved welcoming our future students to campus as they prepare to start their journey in Fall 2026! 💛

During their visit, students got a hands-on introduction to the field of speech-language pathology. They explored Articulation Assessment, interacted with AAC devices, and even learned about swallowing through a thickened liquids activity.

A special thank you to our student ambassador, Brooklyn Bolch, for guiding our visitors, sharing her experience, and helping create such a welcoming and engaging day.

We can’t wait to see these future SLPs back on campus soon! 🗣️
