Notables

Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha and Paul M. Collins, Jr. are winners of the 2026 Founders Award Honoring Dom Bonafede for the Best Paper on Executive Politics by a Ph.D.-Holding Scholar for "Presidential References to Executive Actions in Public Comments on Supreme Court Cases.” They will receive their award at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association in Boston, MA in September 2026.

Alex Esparza, Political Science major who will be graduating in May, spent the Spring semester as an intern in Senator John Cornyn’s Dallas Office. He has been asked to stay on after his graduation. This is a important accomplishment and demonstrates the quality of students our program produces!


Makito Takei (PhD alum, at Tecnologico de Monterrey) and his co-authors had their article, "Misreading the Public? Rethinking Surveys in Interstate Disputes," accepted for publication in the Journal of Peace Research.
Taposi Padma Sinha had her article “The Effects of Human Rights of the Tea Plantation Workers: A Study on Hamidia Tea Estate” published in the International Journal of Social Science Research and Review

Massoud Azarfam had his article "Populist Governance and the Reproduction of Crisis: A Cross-National Study of Institutional Decline" accepted for publication in the Chinese Political Science Review.

Catarina Bezerra and Catherine Chinchilla presented their papers at the Notre Dame Student Peace Conference on Apr 10-11 at the University of Notre Dame.

Jacqueline DeMeritt gave an invited talk, “Reasons, Remedies, and Responsibility: Human Rights Scholarship, Education, and Activism,” to the Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) at TAMU-Texarkana on April 21.

Michael Elwell presented "Hated into Being: Discrimination, Threat, and the Making of LGBTQ+ Linked Fate" at the annual meeting of the Midwest Political Science Association, Chicago Illinois, April 23-26.

Kimi King returned from Colombia after completing a 3-week Fulbright Specialist assignment at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana-Monteria. Along with collaborators, Drs. Kate Hernandez Tirado and Daniela Orozco Poveda, the projects examine Strengthening State Governance and National Security in Colombia: Legal and Administrative Assessment of Sociopolitical Risk Management. A panel of government leaders from the national defense ministry, national police, human rights ombudsman's office and local officials participated regarding the challenges of democratic governance in conflict zones

Adriana Marcela García García, Fulbright Scholar and second-year Ph.D. student in Political Science, has been selected to receive two scholarships from the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) for the 2026–2027 academic year: the CLASS UNT Foundation Endowed Fund and the CLASS Dean’s Foundation Provost Fund Scholarship.

John Ishiyama presented his paper “Exploring the Relationship between Political Polarization and Academic Freedom: An initial empirical inquiry” at the International Political Science Association (IPSA) Workshop on Academic Freedom, at LUISS University in Rome Italy, on April 16.

Meilin Li, Lilly Lu (UNT PhD alum, at University of South Carolina), and Glen Biglaiser had their paper titled, "The Effect of Sexual Violence on Chinese Foreign Direct Investment" accepted at Asian Survey.

Valerie Martinez-Ebers, Michelle Ramirez (UNT Phd alum at Texas A&M Kingsville) and Regina Branton, presented their paper “Understanding Opinions on Immigration Enforcement Using the Subjection Social Position Framework” at the annual meeting of the Western Political Science Association, in San Diego CA, April 1-4.

Catherine Chinchilla and Catarina Bezerra were each awarded $400 CLASS Graduate Student Travel Grants to present their research at the upcoming Notre Dame Student Peace Conference sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the Keough School of Global Affairs. Catherine Chinchilla will present "Peace Requires Silence: Why Contemporary Peacebuilding is Structurally Incompatible with Liberation." Catarina Bezerra will present "Rethinking Peace from the Global South: Civil Resistance and Decolonial Peace in Colombia."
Dr. Gloria Cox, received an award from the university, recognizing her 35 years of service at UNT. She received the award at the 2026 UNT Service Recognition Award Ceremony event on March 17. Congratulations Gloria!

Julia Daniel (PSCI major and Conflict and Human Security Minor) – presented her poster "Divided City: The Role of Peace Walls in Perceptions of Security in Post-Conflict Belfast, Northern Ireland" at the UNT Scholars’ Day on March 24, 2026.The mentors were Jackie DeMeritt and Jim Meernik
Professors Jacqueline DeMeritt and Jim Meernik took 5 students to Northern Ireland over spring break to learn more about the history of the conflict known as "the troubles" in Northern Ireland. Students visited with many victims from both sides of the conflict, saw the many political murals and "peace walls" of Belfast, and traveled throughout Northern Ireland to learn more about how peacebuilding and reconciliation have been advancing. The Castleberry Peace Institute and the Conflict and Human Security minor provide these spring break and other overseas educational opportunities to students free of charge. In the past we have visited The Hague, Netherlands to learn about international law and tribunals; Colombia to learn more about peacebuilding and reconciliation, and now Northern Ireland. One of the missions of the Conflict and Human Security minor is to provide relevant, real-world experience for students so they are better prepared to understand conflict and peacebuilding and are highly qualified for jobs in these areas.

March 20. Angela Ocampo (University of Texas, Austin) “Truly at Home? Social Belonging and Political Engagement among U.S. Latinos in Times of Exclusion”. WH 215 12:00 noon-1:30pm

This talk may be of interest to many colleagues with research interests in rebels and civil wars. On March 19, at 12:30 pm in Wooten Hall 116, Dr. Adela Cedillo will present “Female Guerrillas in Cold War Mexico (1960s-1980s). This looks like a very interesting talk that intersects with the research interests of many in the department.

Notables

As part of the International Studies/PSCI Speakers Series, Nathan Hutson, Visiting Professor of Urban Studies at the Kyiv School of Economics presented “Conserving a City in Exile: Resisting Urbicide in Ukraine”. The talk was well attended and discussed cities under occupation in Ukraine after four years of war.



Leo Moradi was recently interviewed for an expert analysis regarding events in Iran by WBAP radio news and FOX 4 television in Dallas, on March 2, 2026.

Morgan Quinnelly received the Graduate Research Experiences Abroad Travel Grant (GREAT Grant) for $4472.00 for the summer 2026 to do dissertation field work in Germany and England. Congratulations Morgan!

The talk discusses cities under occupation in Ukraine after four years of war. The talk will be in WH 216 at 10 am and is part of the International Studies Speaker Series sponsored by the department

Val Martinez-Ebers has been nominated to be the next President Elect of the American Political Science Association, the largest political science association in the world! This is a major achievement for our department. She will be the second APSA president from our department (which no other institution in Texas can claim) and the third President of a major political science association from our department (Marijke Breuning was recently President of the International Studies Association). This indicates that pound for pound we are very heavy hitters in our discipline

Cheryl Tyler is a recipient of the UNT Staff five-year service award. She will receive this award at the Staff Appreciation Staff reception at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, in the University Union Emerald Ballroom 314.

The next “Food for Thought” graduate student presentations will be held on Friday, February 20, 12-1:30 in WH 215. Meilin Li will present “The Effect of Leader Visits on Interstate Conflicts” and Adriana Marcela García García will present her ongoing research

Michael Greig will present the next PSCI department’s Martin Colloquium talk entitled "Corruption & Military Effectiveness: Insights from Ukraine and Implications for China.” The presentation will be from 12pm-1:30pm in WH 215 on Friday, February 27 and is open to all.

Notables

Glen Bigaliser, John Booth (UNT Professor Emeritus), Kimi King and Jim Meernik presented a roundtable panel on February 4, entitled “From Caracas to Bogata: The US-Venezuela Conflict and its implications for Colombia”. This panel discussed the regional security situation after the removal of Maduro in Venezuela and analyzed the implications for US security and foreign policy in Latin America. The panel was sponsored by the Department of Political Science and the International Studies program and is part of the new International Studies Speaker Series.

Jacqueline H.R. Demeritt presented a paper, "How Criminal Organizations Pursue Legitimacy: Evidence from the Medellín Combos" at the annual meeting of the Latin American Political Science Association in Bogota, Colombia on January 29, 2026. The paper is co-authored with Jim Meernik, Sanghoon Kim-Leffingwell, Elise Jones, Gustavo Duncan (Universidad EAFIT) and Juan Camilo Gaviria (Fundacion Aulas de Paz).

Paul Hensel was recently informed by the University Provost, Michael McPherson (see pictures below) and others that he is the recipient of the UNT Foundation Faculty Leadership Award for 2026. The award "recognizes a faculty member who significantly impacts the academic enterprise of the university through his/her leadership and service. The award recipient demonstrates a high degree of professionalism, is committed to the strategic mission of the university, and encourages others to support and work toward the public good through innovative initiatives. The award acknowledges individual and organizational excellence in leadership as demonstrated by the impact of their work at the university, state, national and/or international level." This is one of the highest awards offered by the university, and Paul is most deserving of this award. He will be recognized at the University Salute to Faculty Excellence banquet on April 16 at the HUB Club at DATCU Stadium. Congratulations Paul!

Taekbin Kim (UNT PhD alum, Korea National Defense University) John Ishiyama and Marijke Breuning, had their article “Madness as Strategy? Leader Reputation and the Logic of Elite Purges in Autocracies” accepted for publication in Social Science Quarterly

Yinlong Li (UNT PhD alum) has been hired as a tenure track Assistant Professor at Musashi University in Japan. He will begin that position in the Fall 2026.

Jim Meernik has been named the US Air Force Academy Department of Political Science Distinguished Visiting Professor for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Hadiyah Muhammed, International Studies Major and INST student ambassador has been accepted with full funding to the MSc Local Economic Development program at the London School of Economics.

John Ishiyama received a $3000 grant from the UNT Division of Research Innovation (DRI) to help fund the Second Annual Texas Undergraduate Research Conference of the Social Sciences (TURCSS) to be held on the fall of 2026.

John Ishiyama presented his paper “Identifying pathways for the organizational transformation of former rebel parties” at the Annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA January 14-17, 2026.

Taekbin Kim (PhD alum, Korean National Defense University) had his article “Hailyu (Korean Wave) in North Korea: The Effect of South Korean Media Exposure on the Perceptions of North Koreans” published in the Asian Journal of Peace Building 13 (2): 181-206.
Sergio Martinez, International Studies Master’s student, presented his paper, “Gentrification: How Modern-Day Colonization Feeds the Human Trafficking Business” at the Annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA January 14-17, 2026.
Sarah Perez (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) and Natasha Altema presented their paper “Whataburger, Waffle House, HEB, and the Pentagon Pizza Index: Citizen Reliance on Informal Institutions” at the Annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA January 14-17, 2026.

Ikhlas Abed Reguieg, International Studies Masters student, presented her paper "African Women in Armed Conflict and Peacebuilding”. ” at the Annual meeting of the Southern Political Science Association in New Orleans, LA January 14-17, 2026.
